Research
His research has taken place in several (sub-)disciplines of the humanities and the social sciences
(for details see, From text grammar to critical discourse analysis).
1968-1972. Theory of Literature, especially the development of the semantic aspects of literary
language, with applications mainly in the area of modern (surrealist) French Poetry.
1970-1974. Development of a text grammar, with special attention for local and global semantics
(coherence). Development of the notion of 'macrostructure'.
1972-1977. Special attention for the logical aspects of text grammars (model theories of coherence).
1973-1980. Various studies in the pragmatics of discourse. Development of the notion of pragmatic
macrostructures ('macro - speech acts').
1974-1984. Extensive research (partly in collaboration with Walter Kintsch) in the psychology of
text processing. Development of a model of strategic discourse comprehension.
40
1980- Extension of the cognitive model of discourse understanding towards a social psychological
model of discourse processing (the role of social cognition --opinions, attitudes, ideologies-- in
discourse production, comprehension and communication.
1980- Special applications of earlier work on discourse structures and cognitive and socio-cognitive
processes in the study of news structures and news production and understanding in the press.
1980- Further applications, both analytical and critical, of this earlier work in the study of the
structures, expression, and communication of ethnic prejudices in discourse, e.g., conversation,
news in the press and social science textbooks, as part of a study into the mechanisms of the
discursive reproduction of racism in society.
1985- Increasing interest in a more general account of the role of power and ideologies in society
and their reproduction and legitimation through discourse, often within the framework of what is
(now) called Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).
