Foundry Lab Sheet

This document provides instructions for conducting a workshop practice on sand molding (foundry) for mechanical engineering students. The objectives are to prepare a green sand mold and identify its features and terminology. Green sand is a mixture of sand, clay and water that is used to form molds for metal casting. The method involves compacting the green sand into flasks using a rammer to form the mold cavity around a pattern. Considerations for mold makers after withdrawing the pattern include ensuring all safety procedures are followed and the mold surfaces are clean. The green sand process is important for manufacturers as it allows for high production of metal castings in a cost-effective manner.

TITLE : SAND MOLDING (FOUNDRY)

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Green sand mould is a mixture of sand, clay and water. The term “green” refers to the fact that
mould contains moisture at the time of pouring. The mould possesses sufficient strength for most
applications, good collapsibility and good permeability. There are several major features needed
when preparing green sand mould such as cope and drag flask, pouring basin, sprue, runner
system, riser and vents.

2.0 OBJECTIVE
• To prepare a green sand mould.
• To identify the green sand mould features and its terminology and function

3.0 METHOD OF APPROACH

1. Place pattern at the centre of the flask (drag).

2. Pour the green sand into the flask (drag).
3. Ram the green sand by using the rammer
4. Turn over the flask.
5. Place sprue and riser at the appropriate place and fill with green sand
6. Repeat the step no. 3
7. Ram the sand, scrap excess sand and make vent holes
8. Place the cope flask on top of the drag flask.
9. Separate the cope from the drag.
10.Withdraw the pattern.
11.Ensure that all safety aspects are practiced and cleanliness observed during the process.

4.0 APPARATUS

4.1 MATERIALS: Silica sand, Coal dust, Water, Bentonite, Pattern

4.2 EQUIPMENT: Sand muller, Sand separator

4.3 HAND TOOLS: Rammer, Moulding flasks, Bottom board, Sprue pin, Parting Agent,
Bellows, Heart trowel, Lifters, Trowel, Scriber

5.0 LAB REPORT PREPARATION

The students should prepare a report based on given template (Report Form). Summarize the result
and present the data in tables or figures.

6.0 QUESTION
In your opinion, why the green sand process is very important to the manufacturer? Explain main
considerations needed for mould maker after finish withdraw a pattern.
