Gear Coupling Selection

The document summarizes the selection of gear couplings for various conveyors. It involves calculating the required horsepower per 100 RPM based on motor power and gear ratios. The nearest value from catalogues is selected. Torque and shaft diameter requirements are also checked against catalogue specifications. Material of construction for components like external toothed hub, internal toothed sleeve, fasteners and O-rings are verified against requirements.

SELECTION OF GEAR COUPLING

1) For BCN 3A/B & BCN 9A/B

a) Calculation of required HP/100rpm
Required HP/100 rpm= P x 100 x Safety factor/N
P= 500kW (Motor Power for both BCN 3A/B as well as BCN 9A/B)
Safety factor= 1.5
N= rpm of low speed side= rpm of motor/ gear ratio
= 1500/28.4 (gear ratio is mentioned in the conveyor schedule; rpm can also be
calculated using the formula belt velocity (2.8m/s) = radius of pulley (in this case
500mm) x angular velocity of rotation of the pulley) = 52.79 rpm
Hence the required HP/100 rpm= 500 x 1.34 x 1.5 x 100/52.79- 1903.47 HP/100 rpm
From the chart in the attached catalogue, the nearest value is coming out to be 2052
HP/100 rpm (for RG 12)

b) Calculation of effective torque

Maximum torque= 727 x HP/rpm= 727 x 500 x 1.34/52.79= 9232.18kgm
For RG12, 14692 (> 9232.18) is the maximum torque. Hence the selection is ok w.r.t
the maximum torque consideration
c) Check for the located end/machine end diameter of the shaft
The diameter of keyed shaft in catalogue is matching with the value given in the GA
drawing (215mm). Hence the selection is ok w.r.t the shaft diameter as well
d) Material of construction check

Sl No ITEM MOC (required) MOC (selected)

C 45 (BHN of 179 and yield strength of 598
External toothed hub Plain carbon steel
1 Mpa); This is equivalent to EN 9
IS 2707 Gr 1 (Surface hardened Carbon
Internal toothed sleeve Plain carbon steel steel casting; Equivalent standard is BS:
2 1760 Grade A)
High tensile steel IS 1367 Gr 8.8; This has a tensile strength of
Fasteners
3 bolts 800 Mpa
4 O ring Synthetic Rubber Synthetic Rubber

2) For BCN 1A/B , BCN 4A/B, BCN 2, BCN 6A/B, BCN 8A/B, Tripper conveyors
a) Calculation of required HP/100rpm
Required HP/100 rpm= P x 100 x Safety factor/N
P= 190kW (Motor Power for both BCN 4A/B)
Safety factor= 1.5
N= rpm of low speed side= rpm of motor/ gear ratio
= 1500/23.2(gear ratio is mentioned in the conveyor schedule; rpm can also be
calculated using the formula belt velocity (2.8m/s) = radius of pulley (in this case
500mm) x angular velocity of rotation of the pulley) = 64.655 rpm
Hence the required HP/100 rpm= 190 x 1.34 x 1.5 x 100/64.655= 590.672 HP/100
rpm
From the chart in the attached catalogue, the nearest value is coming out to be
786HP/100 rpm (for RG 09)

b) Calculation of effective torque

Maximum torque= 727 x HP/rpm= 727 x 190x 1.34/64.655= 2862.66kgm
For RG12, 5628 (> 2862.66) is the maximum torque. Hence the selection is ok w.r.t
the maximum torque consideration
c) Check for the located end/machine end diameter of the shaft
The diameter of keyed shaft in catalogue is matching with the value given in the GA
drawing (175mm). Hence the selection is ok w.r.t the shaft diameter as well
d) Material of construction check

Sl No ITEM MOC (required) MOC (selected)

3) For RBCN 5 & 7 BCN 10A/B

a) Calculation of required HP/100rpm

Required HP/100 rpm= P x 100 x Safety factor/N
P= 260kW (Motor Power for both yard conveyors)
Safety factor= 1.5
N= rpm of low speed side= rpm of motor/ gear ratio
= 1500/28.4(gear ratio is mentioned in the conveyor schedule; rpm can also be
calculated using the formula belt velocity (2.8m/s) = radius of pulley (in this case
500mm) x angular velocity of rotation of the pulley) = 52.79 rpm
Hence the required HP/100 rpm= 260 x 1.34 x 1.5 x 100/52.79= 989.962 HP/100 rpm
From the chart in the attached catalogue, the nearest value is coming out to be
1150HP/100 rpm (for RG 10)

b) Calculation of effective torque

Maximum torque= 727 x HP/rpm= 727 x 260x 1.34/52.79= 4798.007kgm
For RG12, 8234 (> 4798) is the maximum torque. Hence the selection is ok w.r.t the
maximum torque consideration
c) Check for the located end/machine end diameter of the shaft
