AC Drives in Compressor Applications

The document discusses AC drives and compressors. It defines compressors as devices that compress gases or vapors to higher pressures with a compression ratio of 2 or higher. Main applications of compressors include air compression, refrigeration, chillers, and heat pumps. The main types of compressors are static compression devices like piston, membrane, and screw compressors and kinetic compression devices like axial and radial compressors. Load torque characteristics differ between static and kinetic compression devices. Examples of centrifugal cooling compressors and direct expansion cooling systems are also provided.

Load torque of compressors
Static compression =
“Constant Torque” in proportion to the speed but variable
during a rotation
Very variable with a piston compressor , but also variable
with a screw compressor
Only one case with a piston compressor? Vibration is a big
problem. BEWARE!

Kinetic compression =
“Variable Torque” in proportion to the speed but the pull-out
torque may be high (friction)
