Research Paper About Deforestation

Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests to make land available for other uses. An estimated 18 million acres of forest, about the size of Panama, are lost each year. Deforestation occurs for reasons like illegal logging, industrial demands for timber, and agriculture. It has negative effects like increased greenhouse gases, loss of habitat and biodiversity, and soil erosion. Solutions that have been tried include tree planting, laws against illegal logging, and afforestation.

Introduction

In ancient times, much of the earth’s surface was covered by forests. Today, forests

occupy a much smaller, but still very large percentage of the earth’s surface. These

forests are important, not only for cleaning the air that we breathe, but also for providing

a home and livelihood for many different people and animals (wikiEducator, 2009).

Forests cover nearly a third of all land on Earth, providing vital organic infrastructure for

some of the planet's densest, most diverse collections of life. They support countless

species, including our own, yet we often seem oblivious of that (Mclendon, 2019). The

process of clearing large areas of indigenous forests for other uses, is known as

deforestation (wikiEducator, 2009). Humans now clear millions of acres from natural

forests every year, especially in the tropics, letting deforestation threaten some of Earth's

most valuable ecosystems(Mclendon, 2019).

Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land

available for other uses. An estimated 18 million acres (7.3 million hectares) of forest,

which is roughly the size of the country of Panama, are lost each year (Bradford, 2018).

Deforestation is a problem that is caused largely by greed and want for property, money

and possibly status. In many parts of the world the forest is taken for granted as a

replenish able resource, which it is. The problem is that the trees cannot be re grown and

replanted at the rate at which they are being cut down (Destruction of Our Green Planet,

n.d.).
The effect of deforestation is the loss of habitat of animals, the increased of

greenhouse gases, level in water in the atmosphere, soil erosion, and etc. (Pachamama

Alliance, 2019). Seventy percent of the world's plants and animals live in forests and are losing

their habitats to deforestation, according to National Geographic. Loss of habitat can lead

to species extinction. It also has negative consequences for medicinal research and local

populations that rely on the animals and plants in the forests for hunting and medicine (Bradford,

2018).

Problem

Deforestation is one of the major problems in the world. One of this problem is the

illegal logging, illegal logging is the harvesting of wood that is in violation of national

regulations (Yale University, 2019). It involves the use of corrupt ways to reach the

forests or protected areas, the harvesting or cutting down of the trees without approval,

and selling them elsewhere or in black markets as timber (Conserve Energy Future, 2019).

Then, the industrial demands on timber. Industrial logging for timber and pulp and

paper has devastated much of the world’s rainforests. Whole swathes of Indonesian

rainforests and peatlands have been turned into paper pulp for toilet paper, tissues,

magazines, and copy and print paper (Greenpeace, 2012). Through agriculture and

logging, mining and climate change, humans are wiping out irreplaceable forests – and

the life that depends on them, face a lot of problems. We are losing not only our primeval
forests, which regulate our climate and water resources, but also the amazing range of

species that call them home. (Arid Zone Afforestation, 2017).

In East Asia, they have already lost much of their natural forestlands, while their

demand for paper, agricultural products, timber, and meat is driving the destruction of

the world’s last ancient forests in Indonesia, the Amazon, and the Congo (Greenpeace,

2012). Humans needs more timber to supply their needs. With desperate need for land

for agricultural, industrial and most importantly urban needs to contain cities and

their growing population, a direct action that we have come to recognize as

“Deforestation” occurs (Rajib), 2019).

Deforestation effects is a major problem that earthlings encounters (World Wildlife

Fund, 2019). One of the effects of deforestation felt globally is global warming (Craig,

2019). Deforestation affects wild animals, plants and humans in at least four distinct

ways: via soil erosion, which can lead to clogged waterways and other problems; via

water cycle disruption, which can lead to desertification and habitat loss; via

greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global climate change; and via

biodiversity losses, which can lead to extinctions and loss of natural beauty ( Cook,

2018). The disadvantages to deforestation are an increased amount of carbon dioxide

emissions and soil erosion as well as the destruction of forest habitat and the loss of

biological diversity of both plants and animals (Cairoli, 2018).

Things done to solve

Many solutions that already been made to stop deforestation. One of this are the

tree planting. Planting a tree could be considered a lifelong investment into the

environment and your good mental health (Slavikova, 2018). Many environmental

organizations in world protest to plant a tree more. The next thing is the Anti- illegal

logging that being implemented by our government. Illegal logging activities, specifically

cutting, gathering, collecting, removing and possession of timber and other forest

products both from public and private lands without authority are punishable and

penalized under the Presidential Decree 705 or the Forestry Reform Code of the

Philippines (DENR, 2019). The next is the afforestation, afforestation is the process of

planting trees, or sowing seeds, in a barren land devoid of any trees to create a

forest(Matter Of Trust, n.d.)Afforestation can restore forests, and also helps protect

again soil erosion and flooding (Ari Reid, 2018).

Recommendation

Timber from trees are needed by humans to survive. We depend on trees, because
trees support us like we get timber to make house, furniture, and etc. But there is a
solution to lessen the demand on timber.

The following solution are:

1. We must recycle papers. Papers are from trees if we recycle papers, we can lessen
the cutting of trees.
2. Replacing the trees that we cut.
3. Our government must strong implement the law against illegal logging.
4. We must help the government to protect the preserve forest against illegal
logging. If you see someone who cut the trees in preserve forest, report it
immediately to the authority.
5. Lastly, to protect the forest, it must start in our selves. We must protect it, not in
words but in action.
