Q1. Find the equivalent mass and equivalent stiffness of the rocker arm assembly shown in
figure 𝑸𝟏 with respect to 𝒙 – coordinate. Also determine the equivalent torsional stiffness
and equivalent moment of inertia with respect to 𝜽 coordinate. Using these two sets of
equivalent stiffness and inertia, find the natural frequency in each case. 14 M
Q2. Column of a water tank 90 m long is made of reinforced concrete of modulus of elasticity
𝑵
𝟐. 𝟖𝟖 ∗ 𝟏𝟎𝟗 𝒎𝟐 . Column is circular in cross section with inside and outside diameters 𝟐. 𝟒 𝒎
and 𝟑 𝒎 respectively and is of gross mass 𝟐𝟕𝟎 𝒕𝒐𝒏𝒔. Determine the natural frequency of
transverse vibrations of the tank and response of the water tank assuming that column has
only stiffness and no mass. Take the initial displacement as 𝟐𝟓 𝒄𝒎 and initial velocity as zero.
What are the maximum values of displacement and velocity? 10 M
Q3. A hydraulic control valve vibrates under fluctuating pressure acting on the valve and
force fluctuations on the valve modelled as a spring-mass-damper system are given by
𝟗𝟖𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝟎 ≤ 𝒕 ≤ 𝟏
𝑭(𝒕) = { . Determine the first seven Fourier coefficients
𝟗𝟖(𝟐 − 𝒕) 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝟏 ≤ 𝒕 ≤ 𝟐
𝒂𝟎 , 𝒂𝟏 , 𝒂𝟐 , 𝒂𝟑 , 𝒃𝟏 , 𝒃𝟐 & 𝒃𝟑 using usual notation. Hence approximate the forcing function as a
harmonic function using these seven harmonics. Hence define the response of the system if
stiffness of the spring is 𝟐 𝑲𝑵/𝒎, damping constant is 𝟖 𝑵 − 𝒔/𝒎 and mass is 𝟎. 𝟐 𝑲𝒈. 14 M
Q4. b) A motor car vibrates in vertical direction harmonically while crossing over a speed
breaker. Mass of the car is 𝟏. 𝟓 𝑻𝒐𝒏𝒔 and suspension system of the car has a stiffness of
𝟓𝟎𝟎 𝑲𝑵/𝒎. Damping ratio for the structure is 𝟎. 𝟑𝟓. Determine the displacement amplitude
when the car has a speed of 𝟏𝟖 𝑲𝑴𝑷𝑯 and speed breaker geometry is sinusoidal with an
amplitude of 𝟔 𝑪𝒎 and a wave length of 𝟔 𝒎. 6M
