Threat, frustration, pressure, and conflict.

Threat - Being afraid to walk home alone. Worry that a friend won’t invite you to an 
event. 
 
Frustration - Not able to complete an assignment because your sister is using the 
computer.  
 
Pressure - Being expected to make the honor roll. 
 
Conflict - A friend wants hang out the same night you have gymnastics class.  
 
4. What are five physical effects of stress? 
Stomach ache, sweating, pale complexion, headache, tight or sore muscles, shaky 
hands, sleepiness, and rapid breathing  
 
5. What are five emotional effects of stress? 
Moodiness, loss of enthusiasm, forgetfulness, excessive worry, apathy, feeling 
overwhelmed, feeling short-tempered 
 
6. What is a stressor? 
Anything that causes stress. 
 
7. What is the difference between eustress and distress?  
Eustress is positive stress and distress is negative stress.  
 
8. Give two examples of eustress. 
Trying out for a team, running for student council, participating in a spelling bee, 
moving to a new school, going on a vacation, planning a birthday party 
 
9. Give two examples of distress. 
Failing classes, loss of a pet, divorce of parents, getting suspended, getting in a fight, 
getting arrested 
 
10. List five ways to manage your stress. 
Get physical exercise, spend time with friends, manage your time, play with a pet, 
write in a journal, talk to someone, eat healthful foods, get plenty of rest 
 
→ Be able to identify whether a coping method is positive or negative.

11. What is the COPE method? What does each letter represent? 
The COPE method is used to manage stress in positive ways.  
C - Change how you think about the stressor 
O - Organize with attention to time management 
P - Practice relaxation techniques 
E - Emotions can be managed  
 
12. What is self-esteem? 
The ability to like and respect yourself.  
 
13. What is self-concept? 
One’s perception of self. How you would describe yourself.  
 
14. What or who influences your self-concept? How can you improve your self-concept? 
Peers, teachers, family, media, unrealistic goals. You can improve your self-concept in 
the following ways: recognize your strengths, improve your weaknesses, think 
positively, set realistic goals, develop healthy relationships, get enough sleep, be 
physically active, choose positive role models, make decisions based on your values, 
realize you are in control of your actions.
