Commonly used functions

Commonly Used Functions
We will use many di erent functions throughout the course.  Many functions only use one parameter, such as a range of cells as the SUM
function does.  Others, might use multiple parameters.  If they do, the parameters are separated by a comma. 

Here are some common functions that you will be using:

AVERAGE(cell range) - returns the average of the speci ed cells

MEDIAN(cell range) - returns the median value of the speci ed cells

STDEV(cell range) - returns the standard deviation of the speci ed cells

MIN(cell range) - returns the minimum value of the speci ed cells

MAX(cell range) - returns the maximum value of the speci ed cells

Note: To solve the following exercise, use the Sample 1 spreadsheet provided in the tab "Spreadsheet Layout" (to download it again click here).

Common multiple parameters functions

Many functions require two or more input parameters. For example, the function QUARTILE(cell range, value) returns the 0th, 25th, 50th, 75th, or
100th percentile value in a range of cells. It requires two input values: the cell range and a value specifying whether you want the 0th percentile
(0), 25th percentile (1), 50th percentile (2), 75th percentile (3), or 100th percentile (4). This function is handy to understand the shape of a
distribution. For example, =QUARTILE(C2:C11,2) will return the 50th percentile value of the Quantities - note that this is the same thing as the
Median value.

Using the QUARTILE() function, answer the following questions:

Hi Ahmed_abuelward,

Can you please specify which part you didn't understand so that we can try to explain it in more detail.

I suggest you should try to solve the questions using the spreadsheet given in the problem, if you haven't already done so. That will give you more
clarity. How to use each function is well explained at the start of the question itself.
