CBR Discourse Analysis

This critical chapter book review summarizes chapter 2 of the book "Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers" by Michael McCarthy. The chapter discusses how discourse analysis relates familiar grammatical concepts like clauses, pronouns and conjunctions to discourse-level concepts like themes, references and anaphors. It shows how discourse analysis has helped understand the relationship between grammatical choices within sentences and the overall organization of discourse. While the discussion is complete, it uses some words that may be difficult for readers to understand and does not include any images.

Discourse Analysis

The Tittle of Book : Discourse Analysis for Language Teachers

Author : MICHAEL McCARTHY

Published : Cambridge University Press 1991

Summary :

In my critical chapter book review I just criticize 1 chapters; only chapter 2.

Chapter 2 : Discourse analysis and grammar

In this chapter we will start on familiar ground. Much of the discussion will use terms that are
common in language teaching: clause, pronoun, adverbial, conjunction, and so on, and we
shall be using them in familiar ways. But we shall attempt to relate them to a probably less
familiar set of terms: theme, rheme, reference, anaphoric and so on, in order to make the fink
between grammar and discourse.
This chapter has taken a selection of grammatical. concepts and has attempted to show how
discourse analysis has contributed to our understanding of the relationship between local
choices within the clause and sentence and the organisation of the discourse as a whole.
A discourse-oriented approach to grammar would suggest not only a greater emphasis on
contexts larger than the sentence.

Advantages :
- This book has a complete identity.

- Author gave examples in every discussion of chapter book.
- There are many references.

Disadvantages :
- The discussion of this chapter is good, but many words that are less understand to the
readers.
- This chapter doesn’t attached the image.
