THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Regardless of how advanced technology and science are, people
are still attached to old traditions and beliefs influenced by mysticism,
superstitions, spiritualism, and religions. It is undeniable that these beliefs
have been deeply rooted in our culture and ways of lives.
Fortune-telling is popular in the Philippines because it was part of
our culture. Looking to think about future, by whatever implies conceivable
gives some sort of expectation on future or direction to persevere through
present hardships.
Fortune telling has manifest and latent functions in the Filipino
society. With regard to its manifest function, fortune telling helps people
lessen their sense of uncertainty of the future. Another manifest function is
that of self-understanding.
Based on a study of Live Science (2014), fortune-telling has been
practiced for millennia. Humans have always yearned to know what the
future has in store for us. Who doesn't want a glimpse — even if only for a
few moments — of the cosmic plan to see if our destiny lies in riches or
ruin?

Different strategies for fortune advising give an approach to look
into future with some direction to turn away terrible or seek after great.
The individual leaving that long voyage sets himself up to endure the
experiences prone to meet with by arranging ahead of time. Forever's
voyage we are not furnished with any guide. Crystal gazers are the main
means. (Feifei Wang, 2013)
Fortune telling is personal and is somewhat intimate in a sense that
the client shares to the mystic some private details of his/her life with the
mystic willingly receives such inputs.
From this study, we will be gaining a lot of references and
knowledge, with a lot of efforts and time to make this study as good as
possible.
The researcher assure that, with the help of this study, people will be more
aware about the beliefs, fate, and experiences of the fortune-seeker.
OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The researchers sought to find out if what are the motives of the
Fipilino people in seeking fortune-telling session, and how predicting
future events towards their life’s and beliefs still exist in today’s
generation. Particularly this research aims to answer the following
questions:
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 4
1. To determine what factors motivate the respondents to seek
fortune-telling sessions.
2. To analyze how the given “fortune” or prediction affects their
everyday lives and beliefs.
3. To understand why fortune-telling is still patronized by Filipinos.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION
This study focused on those people of what are their motivations in
seeking fortune-telling, how their fate and beliefs in fortune-telling affects
their everyday lives, how do they come up with the predictions to their
future and why is it still patronized by many Filipino people who
specifically having their fortune-telling session in Quiapo. A maximum of 5
participants will be interviewed. The researcher decided to conduct this
study in Quiapo because it is one of the well-known places when it comes
to fortune-telling and there where the area where the nagpapahula having
their fortune-telling session. There is a bigger chance for fortune-telling
sessions to be observe in the said area. With that, the researchers
believed that there is a huge number of fortune-tellers residing everywhere
in this place. The researcher will be focusing only at one city due to limited
time span for the study. The researcher chose the believer to fortune-
tellers of Quiapo not only because of the religious ironies of their place of
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

practice but also to understand their motives in seeking fortune-telling
sessions. This paper shall examine the dynamics of the client-fortune
teller relationship, the views of the nagpapahula towards fortune-telling
and how they allow fortune-telling to exist with their religious faith and
setting. The research instruments to be use are unstructured interview and
documentation.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study aims to help and provide the necessary and substantial
information about the practice of predicting future events towards beliefs,
fate and expereineces of Filipino people who are fortune-seeker.
The outcome and success of this research study will benefit the following:
For Believers of Fortune-telling this study will benefit the believers of
fortune-telling because it might give them information on how predictions
affects to your daily life and to know the procedures during the session of
fortune-telling.
For the community to give them some sort of information about fortune-
telling in predicting their future if ever they go to ask a fortune-teller to
predict their future life events and how do they able to apply it to their
everyday lives and beliefs.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter will discuss the related literature of the study and to
discuss the phenomena that is happening in the Philippines.
A portion of the contrary mental impacts of fortune advising to
individuals are: Individuals have impulses to do fortune telling again and
again, regularly meddling with regular daily existence; it emerges to the
sentiment of unwinding and apathy where individuals depend on
expectations as opposed to diligent work; it can emerge to despondency,
mental turmoil or side effects of uneasiness - pressure, unreasonable
stress, inconvenience dozing, fanatical musings and fatigue. (Fortune
Telling, 2012)
“From what I understand, despite their prophecies, most of these
fortune tellers of Quiapo urge their customers to follow their own path to
salvation. Likewise, as I got older, I've learned to simply fill my mind with
whatever I wanted to happen in my life. Consequently, some of those
nurtured thoughts are bound to become actual experiences, or as Kahlil
Gibran once quipped, "We choose our joys and sorrows long before we
experience.them." If anything, these fortune tellers of Quiapo remind me of
the truth behind the old adage that thoughts do, in fact, manifest
themselves”. (Zialcita, 2007)

Nature of Fortune-telling
Later forms of fortune telling such as the use of Tarot Cards
followed in Greece, India, Italy, China and Egypt in around the 14th
Century. Tarot cards were first associated with Gypsies who used the
cards energies in order to process information about the seekers life. A
tarot reading revolves around the belief that the cards can be used to gain
insight into the current or future situations of the subject. Around the 19th
and 20th Century, modern adaptations of the cards became popular in
western culture, and is still far and away the most popular tool for
spiritualists today. Other predictive forms of fortune telling include
practices such as astrology, the ancient system based on the observation
of stars and planets and their correlation with events on earth. Astrology
has been developed over thousands of years by humans carefully
observing, recording and mapping the skies. Numerology (the association
between numbers and events) and crystal ball readings (where a reader
uses a crystal or glass ball to aid the clairvoyance) are also hugely popular
ways of looking into the future. When looking back over the history of
fortune telling, the most remarkable thing is how, despite centuries of
change and evolution, the demand for the art of the diviner has never
dwindled as humans still strive to find answers and a glimpse into the
future. (The History of Fortune Telling, 2012-2018)

Claims have been made for tarot cards' having originated in China,
India, or Egypt, but their true origin remains obscure. Tarot cards
approximating their present form first appeared in Italy and France in the
late 14th century. At first it was probably used for playing games, though
Gypsies may have used it for fortune-telling. From the 18th century, the
cards began to take on esoteric associations, as certain European writers
connected them to diverse traditions of mysticism, divination, alchemy,
and ritual magic. Later in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the
cards were discovered by a number of influential scholars of the occult.
These gentlemen were fascinated by the tarot and recognized that the
images on the cards were more powerful than a simple game would
suggest. They revealed (or created!) the "true" history of the tarot by
connecting the cards to Egyptian mysteries, Hermetic philosophy, the
Kabbalah, alchemy, and other mystical systems. These pursuits continued
into the early part of the twentieth century when the tarot was incorporated
into the practices of several secret societies, including the Order of the
Golden Dawn. The cards have retained these associations and are now
widely used for fortune-telling. (Jek04, 2009)
Predicting the future has fascinated mankind for years and has
been seen throughout history. Fortune telling is done under the belief that
the universe has a pattern which one can use as clues to determine
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 11
fortunes and events about a person’s life. There are many different
techniques used in fortune telling which have dated back even before
recorded history with evidence showing as far back as 4000BC. Fortune
tellers can be found all over the world and different cultures have formed
their own practice. Predictive methods include astrology, numerology and
using objects such as tea leaves and tarot cards or character analysis
such as studying the lines on the palm of the hand. Fortune telling,
particularly prophetic dreams also played an important role in ancient
religion and medicine. When fortune tellers come from a religious stance
they are known as prophets. (Rose, 2018)
Telling someone's fortune is a practice that dates back centuries
and permeates cultures all around the world. Usually when we hear the
words "fortune teller" we think of a gypsy in a caravan, which is to some
degree a correct image; however, fortune tellers are not of just one ethnic
or cultural background. The practice of divination or fortune telling spans
countries, even continents, and has even stuck around in today's
mainstream media with horoscopes and more. (Fields, 2018)
The Psychology of Fortune-telling
Whatever forms the fortune-telling takes, the basic process is the
same: seeking meaning in random patterns and phenomenon. Some
essentially random event is observed in nature (animal sounds are
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 12
created, dreams are recorded) or caused to happen (tea leaves are
stirred, cards are shuffled), and people closely examines the results trying
to make meaning or sense of them. The human brain is very good at
finding (or creating) meaning even when there is none, such as in random
patterns. That's why people see faces and other images in clouds,
Rorschach blots, and coffee stains. This phenomenon, called pareidolia, is
well known in psychology. (Radford, Fortune-Telling: Fact, Fiction &
Fantasy, 2013)
Our Personal Unconscious is part of the Collective Unconscious
and contains all our personal memories. The Collective Unconscious has
numerous different contents, and at its deepest level are the "Archetypes".
Archetypes are patterns of human behaviour that govern the behavior of
all human beings no matter what colour, race, or creed. For example,
even Stone Age Man buried their dead, even though there was no benefit
in terms of Survival. (Baulsom, 2016)
Fortune telling is a cognitive distortion in which you predict a negative
outcome without realistically considering the actual odds of that
outcome. It is linked to anxiety and depression, and is one of the most
common cognitive distortions that arise during the course of cognitive
restructuring. (COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY LOS ANGELES,
2015)

According to the paper, Helen had been consulting fortune tellers
since she was 19. She started using such people for educational and
career advice as she claimed that she was poor at reaching important
decisions herself and thought the life choices she made would be wrong.
The authors noted that her first meeting with a clairvoyant gave her a
feeling of reassurance. In her mid-twenties, her visits escalated
significantly and ended up “losing control of her use of fortune telling." At
that time, she was visiting clairvoyants to get relationship advice (e.g.,
“Does he really love me?” and “How long will our relationship last?”).
(Mark D. Griffiths, 2016)
Social Perception towards Fortune-telling
People want to see their dreams in a cup of coffee and that's
why their minds distort their perception to let them see the things they
want. But things aren't always that positive, because people have fears
as well their minds will let them see some of their fears in the same cup.
In other words one of the main reasons people believe in fortune telling
is that their distorted perception helps them believe that fortune telling
works! After all if I saw the one I love in a cup of coffee then fortune
telling must be true. Whether you are checking your future in a cup of
coffee or some cards you will always find out something that relates to
you just because your mind was designed that way. (M.Farouk Radwan,
Why do people believe in fortune telling, 2017)
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 14
Predicting the future becomes the cognitive distortion fortune
telling, when we assume that some event or events will end badly for us,
that we will fail at something or we will be in danger, more as
an assumption rather than an educated guess. Of course, some events do
have the potential for danger, and we need to be able to assess the risk in
those situations.
Knowing the future doesn’t attach you at the hip to any ideas, in
fact, I think it does exactly the opposite. It frees you from a lifetime of
unfruitful habits and pretending that the next day of your life is the one that
you are actually going to change. Imagine if you looked into the future and
saw that the lifestyle you chose was not conducive to your future
happiness. Now if you know that’s how your life pans out, unfruitful in any
slew of ways, you now have the insight to tweak your habits in the
present. (Singh, 2017)
Numerous individuals who have confidence in fortune-telling
don't understand that in the event that they are correct, they have
addressed one of the essential inquiries in logic, that of through and
through freedom versus determinism. The vast majority would like to
trust that they control their own behavior and settle on their own choices
throughout everyday life; except anybody's capacity to know the future
demonstrates them off-base. Either there is "a future" to know (or
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 15
possibly witness information of) — and in this manner our future is
foreordained, or what's to come is mysterious and unverifiable.
Consistently, you can't control your very own predetermination if what's
to come is understandable. (Radford, Fortune-Telling: Fact, Fiction &
Fantasy, 2013)
“Why I am talking about fortune telling is written here. So according
to my study, fortune telling is a very old practice and as I mentioned earlier
that there are more than 30+ methods. Very common ones are reading
palms, consulting tarot cards, interpreting dreams or analyzing numerology
etc.” The above mentioned methods are to a certain level okay but there
are some methods that are insane. As such method is Gelomancy which
involves carefully listening to hysterical noises during the fortune telling
process to get the clue about the future. Another creepy method is
Felidomancy which involves observing cats. Probably this practice
generated hatred for black cats among some people who think that if a
black cat crosses the path then it is a sign of a bad omen. (Zerin, 2015)
The real point to comprehend is that since these individuals have
surrendered the faith in their own capacity to shape their prospects they've
lost a noteworthy guard component to ensure them against intolerable
sentiments of existential uneasiness. That nervousness must be tended to
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 16
and lessened by one means or another if life is to be made endurable.
Since they don't have faith in their inner capacity to react successfully to
changing conditions their solitary plan of action is to trust that their
prospects are an unchangeable reality as of now, that the world is an
anticipated and deliberate place. (Schreiner, 2015)
Free Will vesus Determinism
Many people who believe in fortune-telling don't realize that if they
are right, they have answered one of the fundamental questions in
philosophy, that of free will vs. determinism. Most people would prefer to
believe that they control their own actions and make their own decisions in
life; but anyone's ability to know the future proves them wrong. Either
there is "a future" to know (or at least glimpse knowledge of) — and
therefore our future is predetermined, or the future is unknowable and
uncertain. Logically, you can't control your own destiny if the future is
knowable. One doesn't need to consult a psychic or fortune-teller to come
up with a possible, potential vision of something that might or might not
happen. Anyone can do that; if you want to know if something good or bad
could possibly happen to you — from meeting a tall dark stranger to being
killed in a plane crash to winning the lottery — the answer is always yes. If
you want to know whether these things will happen to you, the future — as
always — remains uncertain. (Radford, LiveScience, 2013)
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 17
The act of fortune-telling implies that our lives are indeed ruled by
some sort of dreary determinism, while psychic reading, on the other
hand, is a spiritual or metaphysical exploration of our future as determined
by our free will. A genuine psychic reader does not make sweeping
statements like, “You will meet a handsome stranger and marry him... then
you will win the lottery… then you will be diagnosed with a dreaded
terminal disease… and finally you will die a tragic and untimely
death." Fortune-telling is typically very simplistic and rigidly focused only
on the future, rather than taking a holistic, multi-dimensional view of life
that includes the past, present and future. And often there is also a
complete disregard for the complex interaction of body, mind, soul, spirit
and the eternal laws of the Universe. Sure, we all sometimes wish the
winding road of life was really all that simple and straightforward, but from
your personal experiences you must know by now that this is not the case.
Looking back over your life, I am sure you can see how your choices and
decisions over the years, both good and bad, have pretty much brought
you to where you find yourself today. (Maarten, 2018)
Importance of Knowing Our Future
The past is our establishment, the bedrock that enables a steady
society to exist, it is here that we can see our Legends, the individuals
who have done incredible and respectable deeds and considerations. In
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 18
our past we see our disappointments and our foes, our triumphs and our
thrashings. The past permits the general population of the present and the
future to learn without persevering. We can perceive how others adapted,
we can see that others survived tough occasions. The past gives us mettle
and it secures us. Not exclusively would we be able to see the penances
that have been made for us by those before however we can utilize that to
ensure ourselves now and later on. It is a blessing that our precursors
offered to us, an incredible blessing. (Bhondekar, 2017)
The investigation of history is imperative since it can reveal to us
how we advanced. It can reveal to us what decisons worked specifically
circumstances before and what didn't. This can be helpful when taking
choices today in comparative circumstances. We can likewise take
motivations from specific occasions to spur us. For instance, The Skirmish
of Thermopylae, The Clash of Longewala, The Skirmish of Saragarhi.
These occasions reveal to us how a couple of remained against many.
They can fill in as motivations for individuals who end up dwarfed by their
adversaries (be it anyplace). Additionally considering why Domains
crumbled may give us bits of knowledge into how to productively run our
nations. On the off chance that the Germans had taken exercises from
history, at that point amid World War 2, they wouldn't have battled in
Russia amid the winter, similar to Napoleon did. Along these lines, the
primary purpose for why we should contemplate History is to guarantee
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 19
that we don't rehash indistinguishable errors from our progenitors when
History rehashes itself. (Mallick, 2015)
Further to the other sceptical responses: the fortune teller will
usually throw out a large number of 'Barnum statements' that sound
specific and personal, but which will apply to a large number or most
people (this technique is also used in horoscopes and astrology). These
statements will be tailored to the individual according to clues from their
age, sex, the way they dress, rings, etc. After the telling, confirmation bias
will come into play, and any events that are even vaguely similar to one of
those predicted, will be taken as confirmation of the prediction. Those
predictions that don't trigger any recognition will simply be forgotten - the
fortune teller will generally be remembered only for 'correct' predictions.
This, coupled with the malleability of memory and reinforcement with
repeated recall and telling the story, will often change the memory of a
prediction from being just familiar enough to recall, to a belief that it was a
detailed and specific prediction of what subsequently occurred. This isn't
just something that only happens to stupid or gullible people, everyone is
prone to these biases; being aware of them is the best way to avoid
fooling yourself. (Lorde, 2015)

Synthesis
Fortune-telling or divination is defined as the art or act of foretelling
future events or revealing occult knowledge by means of augury or an
alleged supernatural agency. In spite of the existence of advanced
technology, however, people still cling to these “supernatural agencies” to
know if they will win the lotto or get a boyfriend. Having a degree in
Management or the like does not exclude one from being curious of their
future. Prior expectations can lead a person to process information in a
biased manner such that the expectations are confirmed. Despite its
prevalence in everyday judgments, people lack insight into expectancy
confirmation processes.
The experience of fortune telling is personal and is somewhat
intimate in a sense that the client shares to the mystic some private details
of his/her life with the mystic willingly receives such inputs. For a fortune-
telling to be deemed successful, certain factors on the part of the fortune-
teller and client must be achieved and maintained in the duration of the
session. Fortune-tellers depend on their personal skill to create meaning.
It is not the cards themselves that create meaning. The interpretation of
the fortune-teller creates meaning for the cards or lines of the hand and
the client’s mind-set and context creates meaning for the readings of the
fortune-teller.

The fortune-telling session embodies the very essence of a typical
commercial transaction between a buyer and a seller. The reversal of
roles which is manifested by the transfer of the “alpha status” from the
customer to the proprietor is very apparent in a fortune-telling session
through the interaction of the mystic and the client, thereby making itself
worthy of being deemed as a “Business of the Future”. Fortune-telling also
brings forth a sense of control on the part of the client. In general, a
person who has good fortune is a person who has a very efficient luck that
would help him achieve his goals. A very efficient luck is defined as using
as few elements as possible to effectively achieve (through interactions) a
person's desires. (How does fortune-telling work?, 2014)

CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter describes the applicability of qualitative
research methodology, articulates the phenomenological research
approach, the research questions, data gathering procedure, data analysis
and issues with the informants confidentiality. The researcher seeks to
discover, investigate and analyze on how fortune-telling affects the fate
and beliefs of nagpapahula by having the fortune-telling sessions in
Quiapo as well as the factors that influenced that persuade the
nagpapahula in believing the hula or fortune-telling.
Method
Qualitative research method in narrative research design was used
by the researcher in order to come up with the purposes of the study
which sought to determine motives in seeking fortune-telling the and the
fate and beliefs of the Nagpapahula, how does it affects to their everyday
life and why they still patronized fortune-telling. To gather the data
needed, researcher used the Naturalism approach. This method
systematically gathers, analyze, and represent people’s stories as told by
them. This study ascertains the Fate and Belief of the Nagpapahula of
selected people towards their everyday life.
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 23
The researcher will be using in-depth interview to give a better
explanation regarding to the life experiences of the participants in this
study.
The researcher will be using in-depth interview because of its
flexibility in approach. It aims to ask questions to explain the reason
underlying a problem or practice in a target group. Thus, attaining the
information needed is the life experiences of the nagpapahula and also
their way of living as a fortune-telling believer. The researcher will be
using this to have a discussion with the participants.
Naturalism approach in Qualitative research presents the lives and
perspectives of those being studied as faithfully as possible and to present
the stories of these being studied in their own voices. The researcher will
go to the particular place where the participants are residing. The goal is
not just to know few concepts about the life experiences of the
participants, but as stated in the title of the study, researcher will
determine the fate and beliefs of the nagpapahula, and the ways of
volunteers in applying the hula which is being said by the fortune-teller.
And researcher believes that throughout the study they can gain more
knowledge while determining the study about the fate and beliefs of the
nagpapahula.
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 24
Instruments
The tools used by the researchers for gathering some data about
the participants are voice recorder and video recorder to be convenient in
gathering the data. And also, we used pencil and paper to jot down some
important highlight of the interview and at the same time facilitating the
information gathered. The researcher used Unstructured or Non-directive
interview in their study in which questions are not prearranged. This non-
directive interview is considered to be an opposite of a structured interview
which offers a set amount of standardized questions. Researchers will still
provide some advance questions in relation to their study and the
following questions will now depend on the participant’s response. They
tend to be more informal and free flowing than a structured interview,
match like an everyday conversation. This nature of conversation allows
for spontaneity and for questions to develop during the interview, which
are based on the interviewees’ responses. One of the duties of the
researchers is to make each of their questions sensitively and not
overwhelming to the participants. The questions prepared by the
researcher will first validate by the selected professionals before
proceeding to the interview in Quiapo. The prepared questions may
probably be change depending on the validator’s suggestions. If
approved, the questions will serve as guide for the researchers in
conducting the depth interview.
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 25
Data Collection
The data gathering will start after the participants permitted the
researchers to conduct an interview. The researcher will conduct the
interview and will record and jot down the conversation. The session will
use an audio recorder to be able to record the actual question and answer
conversation between the interviewer and interviewee that will help to
provide clearer information to the study.
The researcher will use the Sikolohiyang Pilipino which is the
Katutubong Pamamaraan ng Pananaliksik to be more effective in
conducting interview, interaction and to build a good connection between
the researchers and the participants.
Pagtatanung-tanong - was a Filipino word for asking questions. The
repetition of the word “tanong” is the seriousness of the researcher in their
study, they more likely interested in the chosen title they have.
Pakikipag-kwentuhan - is a way where the researcher and participants
exchange information through the guide questionnaire that researchers
made to avoid stereotyping and trouble between them. By using this
pakikipag-kwentuhan method, researchers will able to gain information
shared by the participants that are valuable to the study. Furthermore, this
method will help to gain a strong connection between the researchers and
the participants.
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 26
Participants
Research participants is very important in conducting a research,
they have the biggest role to complete a certain study, because without
participants, study will become useless. They are the one who help the
researchers in conducting their study. Also, the researcher needs a
specific target or participants to be more effective in this study.
The researcher will use Purposive Sampling in choosing
participants. The participants will be those people who has a different life
experiences regarding to their fate and beliefs to a fortune-teller. A
maximum of 3 respondents will be interviewed; they will be located at
Quiapo nearly in Quiapo Church.
Research Field Experience
The researcher planned their visit in Quiapo where they’re going to
conduct their interview together in searching for the respondents to be part
of the said study. First, they make sure that they are free from school
hours so that it will not affects any of their school activities. The night
before their arrival, the researcher prepare the materials what to bring
needed for the study, and what actions or behavior they should make
once they go to the place.
Around 6:30 AM the researcher rode a public utility bus going to
Ortigas, and after an hour the researcher arrived on the bus stop of
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 27
Ortigas and rode again a bus going to Quiapo. Since the researcher don’t
have the idea on how to get on the place of where to conduct the
interview, the researcher ask the driver of the bus to stop over on the
exact place of Quiapo.
When the researcher reaches their destination, they observed that
the Quiapo was so crowded by so many people who are attending the
mass in Quiapo church, many street vendors who are selling different
kinds of occult of the Nazareth, rosary and many more ritual products and
a public utility jeep. To gain some participants of the research, the
researcher looked for respondents that can help them to gather some
information about nagpapahula who are having their fortune-telling
session with the fortune-teller. The researchers did not stop to look for a
respondents who are willing and dedicated to participate in the study. It
was difficult to find the right people/volunteer for this study because some
of them doesn’t want to get involved in the study because they want
privacy regarding to their life in engaging to fortune-telling. But on behalf
of it there is still some respondents who cooperate with me in having this
study. Though the respondents don’t even know the researcher still they
share their experiences and ideas to help us with our study. They
welcome us with wholeheartedly and with a big smile on their faces.
The researcher decided to come back by the next day to conduct
again an interview to their respondents, since they do not have the

permission to stay and to have a long hour of gathering an information
they agreed to arrive earlier than the last day for them to have more
information to be included in the study. The next day they come back to
the Quiapo at exactly 7o’clock in the morning and continue the interview
and gathering of information.
Above all the instances that might occur while conducting this
research, researchers had been very fortunate to find some participants
who will accept them, those volunteers who are participating in this study
and who share their life experiences willingly. As the researcher go along
with their studies, every volunteer they have interviewed, give them a new
learnings and experiences that they can used for future purposes.

CHAPTER IV
PRESENTATION OF DATA
This chapter provides the presentation, analysis and interpretation
of data collated from the responses of the participants relevant to the
problem discussed in the preceding chapters.
The use of this method aimed to assist the researcher to come up
with appropriate and related themes, concepts, ideas, and figures. This
qualitative research data analysis involved three steps. Domains, core
ideas and Cross analysis of the data gathered. This paved the way for a
matched theme between the answers of the respondents. Domains (i.e
topics used to group or cluster data) were used to segment the interview
data. Core ideas (i.e summaries of the data that captured the essence of
what participants responded in fewer words and simpler statements but of
greater clarity) were used to abstract the interview data within the
domians. Finally, a cross analysis was used to construct common themes
across participants (i.e developing categories that describe the common
themes reflected in the core ideas within domains across cases).
Qualitative data analysis is an iterative and reflexive process that
begins as data are being collected rather than after data collection has
eased (Stake 1995). Next to field notes or interview transcripts, the
qualitative jots down ideas about the meaning of the text and how it might

relate to other issues. This process of reading through the data and
interpreting them continues throughout the project.
To protect the identity and preserve the anonymity of the
participants, they were herein referred to us Participants A, B, C, D, and E.

I. To determine what factors that motivate the respondents to
seek fortune-telling sessions.
Participant A: “Uhm… dati kasi nung nakatira pa kami sa Novaliches may
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 31
magpahula...
Participant C: “One time dati hinulaan ako, hindi vague yung answer kaya
medyo bumilib ako.... nalaman niya yung problem ko that time, about love...
given the chance, kaya gusto ko ulet itry, magask questions and stuff like
that to check kung magaling ba talaga siya...”
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 32
akong future as time goes by and kung magkakaroon ba ako ng sarili kong
Participant A: “Ano uhm… kasi siguro wala namang masama kung
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 33
Participant B: “Uhm… dati kasi talaga takot ako magpahula kasi ano baka
ganto ganyan may mangyayaring masama sakin ganun kaya natatakot ako,
Participant A: “Ano… dati nga nung nasa Novaliches pa kami nakatira
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 34
makakapagtapos… nung sinabe sakin yon natakot ako kasi syempre ayoko
Participant B: “Dati I tried na magpahula kay Master Hanz pero it's not just
tarot reading. It also includes a personal FengShui reading. kaya ang value
won’t be good for me... saglit lang masaya and then here we are again... for
the sake of family tinuloy ko pa din. So sabi nya, sige nga, silipin na nga
natin ang chart ng bf mo. Ayun... bigla bigla sabi nya... "Ay! ay... wag na
wag mo pakakasalan tong taong to ha!"
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 35
daw ako mabubuhayan ng anak… nung ano sinabi yun sakin ng
manghuhula… kinabahan ako kasi parang natakot ako kasi baka
nalang masaydo iniisip yun…”
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 36
Participant E: “Oo nagkakatotoo lahat… tsaka kaya nga ako naniniwala
kasi nagkakatotoo lahat…”
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 37
Discussions:
They differ in perception of what motivates them. Four (4) of the
respondents motivates to seek fortune telling when they were once try to
have a fortune telling session out of their curiosity while one of the
participant motivates to seek fortune telling session because of the
consistency that their family have only one fortune telling. Furthermore,
the two (2) participants said that the reason why they believe in fortune
telling because as for them they use it as a guide in which it makes them
be prepared to their next future and life events, while the reason of three
(3) participants why they seek fortune telling it's because almost all of the
predictions to them happens. Almost all of the participants have the same
question to the fortune-teller, usually they want to know the future events
about their career, family, lovelife and what would be their future life
events. They usually ask those questions to the fortune-teller to know if
the predictions to them is possible to happen and also for them to take
action for that to happen. Some of the participants stated about their
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 38
experiences in fortune telling where in it shows that predictions has a big
impact to their various aspects of lives a specifically their family, career
and life which is really affected by the fortune telling. Where participant A
got disappointed to herself because she did not prepare her family not to
happen that prediction then participant B shares her experiences about
her ex-boyfriend in which she stated that it's a good chance for her that
they're not together anymore, participants she had stated her experience
regarding a child wearing the fortune teller have a prediction to her that
she can't bear a child which makes her worried but somehow the
prediction did not happen but almost near possible to happen because her
first three child died when she was baring them inside her womb but in
spite of what happened she is very thankful that she has now her healthy
children. While the other two (2) participants said that whatever the
predictions are might be good or bad weather it happens or not still so we
are the one shaping our future according to them. Moreover, three
participants said that all of the predictions to them happens while the two
participants said that not all of the predictions happened to them. And
also, they differ in perception and what is the importance of knowing the
future through fortune telling. Four (4) of the participants said that it is
important to know their future in order for them to be aware and have an
idea on what will be their future so that they could still have the time to be
prepared for it weather it's a good or bad prediction, while the one
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY

participant said that predictions has a big help for her because it answers
her questions about what would be her future.
Synthesis-Analysis:
II. To analyze how the given “fortune” or prediction affects
their everyday lives and beliefs.
namin tsaka nahula siguro sakin yan year 2010 mga ganun… kasi ngayon
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 40
Participant A: “Uhm… siguro yong hula sakin dati nung nasa novaliches
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 41
daw ako agad di daw ako makakapagtapaos ng college, that time parang
nagkaroon ako ng anxiety na baka mangyari nga ‘yon, eh that time first
year college palang ako eh… kaya masyado talaga akong nangamba dun
sa sinabe ng manghuhula”
Participant C: “Hmmm… ano ba… parang wala naman”
Participant D: “Wala akong maalala eh… siguro nung may nakikita daw
‘yong aking magiging kapalaran kasi nagkakatotoo talaga tsaka…
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 42
Participant A: “Uhm… ‘yong kapatid ko dati nung nasa Samar sila ng
pamilya niya dun sila nakatira nung panahon na yon may sakit asawa niya
kaya kinailangan na dalhin sa ospital eh hindi kasi kaya sa mismong
hospital sa Samar, Catbalogan kaya kelangan daw nila dumiritsso sa
Tacloban… nung time din naman na yan may bagyo sa Tacloban yun yong
Yolanda typhoon… kwento sakin ng kapatid ko na pasakay na daw sila nun
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 43
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 44
maganda ganun”
Participant B: “Oo kasi as for me… ano guide ko yong mga nahuhula
sakin then if may maganda ngang nahuhula sakin… then parang hindi
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 45
office sa work ko and yun.”
Participant C: “Oo as long as kaya ko siya magawa para mangyari ‘yong
hula sakin.”
magkatotoo… ”
Participant E: “minsan hndi”
Discussion:
The participants asked on how do they apply to their lives those
predictions to them by the fortune teller wherein they differ on how would
be their way of applying it to their lives, according to Participant A it
depends on the prediction to her if it has a positive outcome or is it a good
prediction, and Participant B have said that by trusting and accepting of
whatever happens to her future, and Participant C and D she said that it
is not enough that she will be just rely to all predictions but she must also
have faith and pray to God to make those good predictions possible, and
lastly Participant E have stated that if the fortune teller predicts her future
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 46
which is near possible to happen she will make an effort to make that
prediction happened which is also base from the advice of the fortune-
teller to her what to do.
Participant A stated that she got upset when she was just lately knew
the prediction to her when she was youngster and she already forgot that
prediction to her and she also said that if she just only got prepared for it
not to happen maybe all of her children now has a good life living,
Participant B said that she got worried about the prediction to her of the
fortune-teller that she will be pregnant and she won't be able to finish her
college because of her pregnancy, according to Participant C she has no
experience regarding the predictions the has a negative result to her life,
Participant D he said that when the fortune teller once said to him that the
fortune teller saw a blurred future which she can't interpret or read in his
cards that's why it makes him think a lot of it, same as with Participant C
Paticipant E said that because of so many predictions she have been
through she can't remember any of the predictions to her that gives to her
and negative result.
Participant C, D, and E has the same response regarding on their
experiences to the prediction to them that has a positive outcome, as they
have said that because all of the good prediction to them happened and
that made them confident to follow the guidelines of the fortune-teller to
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 47
them and also in that way, they know what to do in order for that prediction
happen. While the Participant A said that she became determined about
all the positive or good predictions which has also a positive outcome also
by jsust having a perseverance to make it happen, and also Participant B
said that she realized that even though there are preictions that gives a
negative result to her life still positive prediction also has a positive
outcome in which not all predictions that are negative or bad will be
negative as well somehow negative prediction can also have a positive
result.
In this result the participant differ from what their experiences which
prediction did not happen but has a good result, Participant A said that
when there are times that the prediction to her did not happen because
that prediction has a bad result in which she’s very thankful with that, then
Participant C have stated that when the fortune-teller predicts that she
can’t bare a child wherein she got upset with that but on behalf of that
she’s very thankful that the prediction to her did not happen but it is near
possible to happen because her 3 children died when they where inside
her womb that time.
According to Participant B, C, and E that often time they depend
their future to the prediction wherein they said that how could they even
know if they want to happen the prediction if it is a bad or has a negative
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 48
outcome so with that, they won’t rely to it and those good predictions that
has a positive outcome they make an action for it to happen.
According to Participant A, she do not depend her future to the
predictions because as for her it is ony her guide to her futre wether it is a
good or bad prediction, and Paricipant D that not all the time she will
depend on the predictions to her future .Four (4) of the participants have
the same response in which they make the good prediction possible
wherein they make an action to that prediction to make it happen
especially if it is really near possible to happen because as for them it is
an opportunity that they shoud grab and if it is specifically about the
various aspects of their lives and which is also suggested guidelines of the
fortune-teller.
In other words, to make the prediction happen they follow the
guidelines of the fortune-teller in which they make it as their guide through
accomplishing it to be possible. Participant E said that sometimes if there
is a good prediction to her she doesn’t have the self-confidence that it
could be possible that the good prediction to her will happen even if she
will do something to make to happen.

III. To understand why fortune-telling is still patronized by

magaling nakuha nilang manghuhula eh kaya ganun.”
Discussion:
Participant D and E has the same motives on how their beliefs in
fortune-telling starts wherein at first, they tried only to go to a fortune-teller
to find out if fortune-telling is true and when it proves to them that it is true
in which all predictions to them happened at first trial so their perception in
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 54
fortune-telling changed and from that moment, they start seeking fortune-
telling. Also, Participant A have stated that seeking or believing fortune-
telling is already part of our culture as a Filipino, before she has tat
perception that we are only the one that creates our own future so she
don’t believe in predictions nor fortune-telling, but one time she got curious
and try having a fortune-telling session to her neighbor wherein all the
precitions to her really happened and from that time she regularly go to a
fortune-teller and asks some questions. While Participant B said that it’s
the influence of their family which is, they are a regular customer of that
fortune-teller Aling Conchita wherein all of the predictions to each member
of their family really happens. Participant C stated that when one time
there is a stranger fortune-teller who just hold her hand without even
asking her if she want to know her future that time, she got shock when
the stranger fortune-teller predicts her problem that very moment which is
also her problem exactly, then from that she starts seeking fortune-telling.
The participants differ on how long they have been seeking fortune-
telling and how often time they visit the fortune-teller to ask questions
about their future would be. According to Participant A said that she has
been a seeking fortune-telling for almost a decade, she usually visits the
fortune-teller every two (2) weeks but sometimes every month she visits
the fortune-teller depends to her if she has questions that want to ask.
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 55
Particpant B has stated that almost fifteen (15) years already since when
she was high school and she visits the fortune-teller every three (3)
months. Participant C has already seven (7) years in seeking fortune-
telling and she has been regular wherein she visits the fortune-teller every
two (2) weeks. Paticipant D, according to him he has been seeking
fortune-telling for almost 4 to 5 years, he visits the fortune-teller every four
(4) weeks. And participant E have already six (6) years in seekig fortune-
telling wherein she just only visits the fotrtune-teller every after attending
the mass at the Quiapo church like every four (4) months because her
house is in Laguna which is difficult for her to travel to Quiapo just to ask a
fortune-teller about her future. Participant A and C stated that fortune-
telling as a part of the Filipino culture and beliefs it doesn’t matter if they
will still patronized it and besides her experiences in fortune-telling is the
proof that it still exist today in our generation and as long as the
predictions to them of the fortune-teller happens then this won’t make her
beliefs disappear, also participant D and E said that because of their
strong beliefs about fortune-telling or predictions where it is already been
their habbit and which totally happened according to them. Participant C
said that it is her choice in seeking fortune-telling’, and also because of
her experience where all of the predictions to her happens which make
her still patronized fortune-telling. Paticipants have stated that in their long
journey of seeking fortune-telling wherein they’ve been through about a
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 56
decade, all the participants have the same response wherein their long
way of seeking fortune-telling no one influence their beliefs that could
make them not to seek fortune-telling anymore because according to them
that it is based to the fortune-teller on how do they read their cards on
what it says to their future also they said that based from their experiences
that not all the time their bad experience in fortune-telling won’t change
their mind not to seek fortune-telling because mostly of the predictions to
them really happens.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY OF ANALYSIS, REFLECTIONS, CONCLUSIONS,
and RECOMMENDATIONS
SUMMARY OF ANALYSIS
The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of
fortune-seekers. Likewise, the researcher was also able to identify the
domains, the core themes and the cross analysis through the use of
Qualitative Research in Data Analysis.
As for some people, fortune-telling can be considered as a guide in life.
Some considered it as a guess that predicts their future. It's either we'll
rely on it or we create our own ways that will shape our future much better.
People think that if they knew more about the future they can live the
present better and that they can plan things differently. (Awartany, 2012).
Fortune-telling is attractive to many people because they want to have
some sense that they control their own destinies. By knowing the future, it
is believed that individuals can mitigate any negative things that are
coming their way (Ministries, 2018)
In this study, the researcher found out that there are various factors
that motivate the participants in seeking fortune-telling. According to them
that in the first place they just want to try fortune-telling session which is
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 58
out of their curiousity and one of them was already been a regular fortune-
seeker wherein their family have been a faithful fortune-seeker. They
believed in fortune-telling because it is already been part of our culture as
a Filipino and they said that it is not bad if they will still believed on this
kind of activity which is also one of the reason why they believe in fortune-
telling.
(Boluso, 2016)
Mostly they ask questions to the fortune-teller about the various
aspects of their lives specifically in their career, family, and lovelife. May
Numerous
individuals who have confidence in fortune-telling don't understand that
in the event that they are correct, they have addressed one of the
essential inquiries in logic, that of through and through freedom versus
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 59
determinism. The vast majority would like to trust that they control their
own behavior and settle on their own choices throughout everyday life;
except anybody's capacity to know the future demonstrates them off-
base. Either there is "a future" to know (or possibly witness information
of) — and in this manner our future is foreordained, or what's to come is
mysterious and unverifiable. Consistently, you can't control your very
own predetermination if what's to come is understandable. (Radford,
Fortune-Telling: Fact, Fiction & Fantasy, 2013). Therefore, they seek to
know answers about such matters through fortune-telling.
As for them fortune-telling is helpful in their everyday lives because
they use this as their guide wherein they got an idea about what their
future would be and as of what I’ve obsereved they follow the guidelines of
the fortune-teller for them what action shall they have to make, and with
that they really make an action to to be able for that prediction to happen.
In general, a person who has good fortune is a person who has a very
efficient luck that would help him achieve his goals. A very efficient luck is
defined as using as few elements as possible to effectively achieve
(through interactions) a person's desires. (How does fortune-telling work?,
2014). Hence, as what the fortune-teller predictions which has a positive
outcome of their future wherein it alters their mind and affects their
behaviour to do something to make prediction happens .
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 60
They have faithful in seeking fortune-telling for almost a decade which
proves that it’s already been part of their lives as an individual which
makes them satisfied with what they are doing by applying those
predictions to their lives. “In other words people believe in fortune telling
because they need to believe in it. People want someone to tell them that
their lives will improve, that they will become happy and that good things
are going to happen to them.” (M.Farouk Radwan, Why do people believe
in fortune telling, 2017)
Based from their experiences they have encountered different
predictions that really amazed them and makes them worried as what the
fortune-teller read to their tarot cards. But on behalf of that they still have
their strong fate in seeking fortune-telling.
suliranin. (Joel, 2011)
On behalf of their journey as a fortune-seeker they’ve been through
many experiences regarding on what the fortune-teller predicts to their
future. As stated by the participants, almost all of the preditcions of the
fortune-teller to them really happened maybe somehow they follow those
guidelines of the fortune-teller which makes them satisfied. When the
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 61
fortune-teller predicts to their future a bad prediction or has a negative
outcome they got worried, anxious, and upset because some of the bad
predictions that is near possible to happen but inspite of that they are very
thankful that it wasn’t happen. According to the paticipants that fortune-
telling has been part of our culture as a Filipino individual wherein they still
believed and patronizing fortune-telling. Noong unang panahon pa man,
(Leon, 2018)
21stgeneration of today, a lot of technological advances and norms
yet people keep on believeing looking for a positive hope. Whereof it will
guide them as they’re striving what will happen in the future, for them to
know what will be their action in the present. Hence, fortune-telling is
phenomenological basis, whereas individual believes depending on what
will occur from the said predictions.

REFLECTION
Decades have passed and still there are people who believes in
predictions, they almost spent their lives believing in fortune-telling and
what events being foretold to them by the fortune-teller. The desire to
determine the likelihood of something happening in one’s life has paved
way to acceptability of fortune telling. The idea that fortune is fated has
made many restless in trying to know their purpose in this life. It also
basically practices of predicting events and happenings about a person’s
life. Thus, believing in a favorable future can influence people’s behavior
in the here and now.
Eventhough we’re already in a modern world and there are people
who don’t usually believe in fortune-telling, but still there are people who
seek fortune-telling as one of their guide in their lives, and as well as
fortune-teller serves as their adviser as they already knew that the fortune-
teller knows what they’re going to do in order for them to make that good
predictions come true.
Though there are good and bad predictions but still it’s up to people
what path they’re going to take to have a good type of life living. And as a
part of our culture we cannot say easily not to believe fortune-telling
because there are people who witnessed that fortune-telling is true which
is based on their experiences.

CONCLUSIONS
Therefore I conclude that the researcher have found out of what are
the motives behind seeking fortune-telling of the fortune-seeker. First,
because of their curiousity why they tried once having a fortune-telling
session which gives them a proof for them to believe and continue to seek
fortune-telling. And second is, because one of the participants their family
has a long term fortune-teller who is expert in terms of reading their future
which makes them also been faithful to seek fortune-telling. And with that,
since they’ve already proven that fortune-telling is true or really happens
that’s why continuesly they seek fortune-telling session, wherein they use
it as their guide through their future by following the guidelines of the
fortune-teller to them.
As a conclusion, so far of their being a fortune-seeker it has been
proved that the participants have encountered different experiences which
made them be positive enough on behalf of those negative or bad
predictions to them but somehow, they use those bad predictions as their
motivation to overcome. And also, those positive or good predictions to
them alter their mind to make it possible because they believed that it is
still in their hands if they will pursue to make it happen.
On behalf of those, I also conclude that even on our generation
now there are people who still patronize fortune-telling. Wherein in this
RIZAL TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY
COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES 64
study fortune-telling has been proven that the traditions and beleifs of the
Filipino people won’t disappear in just a nap just because we are already
living in modern world. Also because there people who still recognizing
our traditions and beliefs especially fortune-telling in which it runs already
in our blood as a Filipino individual. Overall, it cannot be denied that
fortune-telling still exist because of fortune-seekers who still patronizing
this beliefs which gives them different experiences. And more often they
rely on it spicifically to good predictions which makes them determined to
make it possible.
In general, the objectives of this study gave all the answers based
on the data gathered and analyse through a critical theory.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The research is for further study and for the development in
understanding the fate, experiences and beliefs of the fortune-seeker. This
type of study is a call for a qualitative approach, as it tries to capture the
context of social research as well as it employs asking set of questions
while collecting data from respondents themselves as a scholarly inquiry.
In the same way, it is an explanatory research whereas it identify the real
reason why things occur as they are.
I therefore recommend that,

Also there is one thing that lacking in this study which is not equal
number of gender wherein the researcher have four (4) paticipants which
is female and one (1) participant which is male. Wherein the information
gathered would be reliable if it has an equal number of participants per
gender that will also make the study more knowledgeable.
