1. Purpose
‘The purpose of this guide is to provide uniform guidance for the plant design layout of the drums. This
document is not intended to supplement nor supersede state or local rules, codes and/or regulation.
‘The designer shall make reference to piping specification P-GS-PL-003-0A (Piping design & plant
layout) for required distances between drums and adjacent process equipment.
2. Definitions and descriptions
Drum are cylindrical hollow steel vessels used in process plants as intermediate container that receive
liquid for distillation and condensing equipment and also collect liquid from vapour circuits and pump
it t0 other process groups, disposal or product storage. Drums are also used for chemical and catalyst
storage, steam separation and de-aeration of boiler feed water. This guide highlights the requirements
for drum layout and provides information required locating nozzles, instruments, piping, controls and
platform relating to maintenance, operation and safety.
3. Types of drums
surge, suction and general liquid collection. Drums are generally
i horizontally and vertically mounted. Drums internal are far
less sophisticated than the components found inside the distillation tower and are limited to
baffles, demister pad, vortex breaker and distribution piping. Exhibit — A shows a typical
vertical compressor suction drum and horizontal Exhibit -B shows the horizontal reflux drum.
Deaerator is usually an integral part of steam drum. Exhibit — C illustrates a typical
arrangement of deaerator.
4, General arrangement of drums
Drums are normally located within the process unit either adjacent to related equipment (e.g.
Reflux drum) or as a standalone operation (e.g. condensate collection drum).
When operating within the process sequence of the related items (e.g. Pumps, condensers, and
towers), the drum should be positioned to facilitate orderly and economic interconnecting
piping. The drums and their related items are generally located on either side of the central pipe
ack serviced by auxiliary road for maintenance access. Flash drum and deacrator are located
above the piperack
Exhibit — D shows the drum location in a tower reflux system and Exhibit - E shows the typical
location of feed surge and compressor suction drum. The drum arrangement in an enclosed plant
structure is as shown in Exhibit - F.
Drum elevation is dictated by NPSH as illustrated in Exhibit — G, minimum clearance, common
platforming, maintenance and operators access. Within structures, especially chemical facilites,
‘drums could be elevated above the min. requirements depending on the floor space availability,
Drums for chemical collection system to be located below ground in concrete pits as shown in
Exhibit—H.

The size and location of the drum influence methods of support. Large vertical drums are
supported by skirts. Small vertical drums are supported by legs as shown in Exhibit - I or by
lugs if elevated within the structure as shown in Exhibit ~J.
‘Horizontal drums are supported by saddles from concrete piers or steel frames if elevated within
the structure as shown in Exhibit ~K.
The first step in drum layout is setting the elevation of the drum. To accomplish this following
details are required.
a) Drum dimension
b) Support details
c) NPSH requirement of the pump
4) Bottom outlet size
€) Min, clearance required
1) Location
8) Insulation requirement
Removal space should be provided above the drums furnished with mixer. The typical
arrangement is shown in Exhibit —L.
5. Platform arrangements
Platform arrangement at a horizontal drum and vertical drum is illustrated in Exhibit - M and
Exhibit —N respectively. For tall vertical drums, platforms are usually circular and supported by
brackets attached to the drum shell. Platforms at the horizontal drum are of rectangular and are
supported by the brackets attached to the concrete piers supporting the drum or trunnion
attached to the shell of the drum. Exhibit - © shows the different types of platform support
arrangement for horizontal and vertical drums.
Platform elevation for vertical drum is set by items that require operation and maintenance. On
tall vertical and highly elevated horizontal drum, the platform elevation is determined by max.
Ladder run of 30 ft. Exhibit ~ P illustrates the horizontal drum platform and ladder elevation
requirements. Platform floor space is requirements for horizontal and vertical drums are shown
in Exhibit - Q and Exhibit - R respectively.
As required by process, horizontal drums are sometimes furnished with small vertical drum
called boot, attached to the underside of the drum. Special consideration must be given to the
arrangement of additional platforming for access to the instrumentation on the boot. Typical
arrangement is shown in Exhibit - S.

6. Piping arrangements
Piping at drums should be arranged in conjunction with nozzle location, platform arrangement
and the drum location related equipment. Piping should be positioned to facilitate the
installation of supports with sufficient flexibility to absorb excessive stresses during operation.
Piping at horizontal free standing drum should be supported cither from the shell of the drum,
platform steel or the concrete piers supporting the drum.
Piping associated with drums located within the structures should be supported from the
structural steel. Exhibit - T shows the typical pipe supports at horizontal drum and Exhibit - U
shows a typical piping suction arrangement Typical drum piping arrangement is shown in
Exhibit - W.
Relief valves that are open to atmosphere on low elevated horizontal or vertical drum should be
positioned to allow the discharge piping to be routed to a safe and convenient location. Closed
system relief valves should be located at a convenient platform adjacent to the drum above the
relief valve header. Relief valve inlet piping shall be as shorter as possible to reduce pressure
drop. The typical relief valve piping arrangement is shown in Exhibit -V.
Level, pressure, temperature gauges are used to control the operation of the drum. Hence they
should be placed in a position which allows the operator to access easily to read the gauge dial.
‘The valves, level controllers, switches must be located in such a way that they are accessible
from a ladder if no platform is available at the required elevation.
