I. Learning Objectives

The document outlines a lesson plan on computer systems. It aims to teach students about the elements and characteristics of computer systems. The key elements are hardware, software, people, procedures, data, and connectivity. Hardware refers to physical components like input, output, processing, and storage devices. Software includes operating systems, applications, utilities, programming languages, and connectivity software. People involved are programmers, system analysts, and end-users. Procedures are sets of instructions that tell computers how to perform tasks. Data is the raw facts and figures input into computers. Connectivity links computers in a network to share information and resources.

Learning Objectives
After this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Identify the elements of computer and their functions
2. Distinguish between computer hardware and computer software
3. Be familiar with the characteristics of computer

II. Subject Matter

Computer System
Characteristics and Elements of Computer System

III. Materials
Projector

PowerPoint Presentation

IV. Procedures
A. Preparatory Activities
Greet students, opening prayer and ask them to seat properly.

B. Motivation
The teacher asks the students what if computer doesn’t exists, how do you feel?

C. Lesson Proper (Presentation of the lesson)

The person who discovered and designed the first modern computer was Charles Babbage in the
mid-year 1833-1871. Computer is an electronic device that stores, retrieves and processes data
and can be programmed with instructions.

Characteristics of Computer
 Speed – Computers operate at very high speeds and can perform many functions within a very short period
of time. They can perform a much complicated tasks faster than human being. The speed of the computer
is measured in fractions of seconds like milliseconds (thousandth of seconds), microseconds, nanoseconds,
picoseconds.

 Accuracy – Unlike humans, computers are very accurate such as they never make mistakes.

 Reliability – the computer can be relied upon to produce the correct answer if it is given the correct
instructions and supplied the correct data.

 Memory Capacity – Computers can store a huge amount of data and instructions for future use, and can
produce and retrieve the data when the users need it.

 Diligence – computer work continuously without getting tired or bored. Even it will do a million of
calculations; it will do the last one with the same speed and accuracy as the first time.

 Versatility – a computer can be used in different places to perform a large number of different jobs
depending on the instructions fed to it.

Elements of a Computer System

There are six main elements that make up a computer system.
1. Hardware
These are all the physical aspects of a computer system.

Four types of computer hardware:

 Input Hardware: For users to input data into the computer system.
 Output Hardware: To translate and display the result of the data processing
 Processing and Memory Hardware: Where data and information are processed and
manipulated to perform the task at hand. It is also the workspace of the computer, where it
temporarily stores data.
 Secondary Storage Hardware: Where the computer system stores data permanently.

2. Software
It is the set of instructions that make the computer work.

Basically, there are six main types of software:

 Operating System: These specialized programs allow the communication between software and
hardware.
Examples: Windows XP, Linux, Macintosh
 Application Software: These are designed to perform a specific task or a bunch of tasks.
Examples: PowerPoint, Tally , Microsoft Office, Adobe photoshop, Visual studio, VLC media
player, Google chrome
 Utility Software: System software that helps to maintain and protect the computer system.
 Language Processors: Software that interprets computer language and translates it into
machine language.
 System Software: This type of software controls the hardware, the reading of the data and
other such internal functions. In general, the user does not interact with system software
because it works in the background.
 Connectivity Software: The special software that facilitates the connection between the
computer system and the server.
Example: Remote Desktop Connection

3. People
These are the people interacting with the computer system.
 Programmers: Professionals who write the computer programs that allow users to interact with
the computer.
 System Analyst: They mainly design data processing systems, and solve problems that arise in
data processing. They are the one who research the problems, plan the solutions, recommend
the software and system and the technical specifications to meet the expectations of the user.
 End-Users: Also known as operators, they are the people who interact with the computer
system.

4. Procedures
These are a set of instructions, written in code, to instruct a computer on how to perform a task, run a
software, do calculations etc.

5. Data
It is essentially the raw facts and figures that we input in the computer.

6. Connectivity
This is when the computers are linked to a network. It facilitates sharing of information, files, and other
facilities.

V. Evaluation
1. Differentiate hardware and software and give some examples.
2. Give at least 3 characteristics of computer system. Explain.
