Beam Design Basis

This document provides a step-by-step process for designing a beam section including: 1) selecting a trial section based on required section modulus; 2) determining if the section is compact; 3) calculating unbraced length; 4) computing allowable bending stress based on compact/noncompact criteria and bracing; 5) checking flexural and shear stresses; and 6) checking deflection. The process determines if the section is "SAFE" or requires "Redesign" at each step based on stress and deflection limits.

BEAM DESIGN BASIS

Part 1. Select a Trial Section for Initial

Design
*Assume that fb = 0.60Fy
Determine the required section modulus
fb = Mcap/Sx, solve for Sx
Choose a trial section nearest to the
computed Sx

Part 2. Determine if the Section is

compact
Criteria of a Compact Section
a. bf/2tf < 170/sqrt(Fy) - flange
b. d/tw < 1680/sqrt(Fy) - web

Part 3. Unbraced Length

L1 = 200bf/sqrt(Fy)
L2 = 137900/((d/Af)*Fy)
The greater value is Lu, and the
other is Lc
The given length value is Lb

Part 4. Compute the Allowable Bending

Stress - Strong Axis
Case 1. Compact, Lb < Lc
Fb = 0.66Fy

Case 2. Noncompact, Lb < Lc

Flange Only
Fb = Fy*[.79 -
0.000762*(bf/2tf)*sqrt(Fy)]
Flange and Web
Fb = Fy*[.79 -
0.000762*(bf/2tf)*sqrt(Fy/kc)]
where kc = 4.05/((h/tw)^0.46) < 70
else,
kc = 1

Case 3. Noncompact, Lb < 200bf/sqrt(Fy)

Fb = 0.60Fy

Case 4. Compact or Noncompact,

Tension Only Lb > Lc
Fb = 0.60Fy

Case 5. Compact or Noncompact,

Compression Only, Lb > Lc
a = sqrt(703270*Cb/Fy)
b = Lb/rt
c = sqrt(3516330*Cb/Fy)

Max Fb = 0.60Fy
Fb1 = Fy*((2/3)-
(((Fy*b)^2)/10.55*10^6Cb))
Fb2 = 1172100*Cb/(b^2)
Fb3 = 82740*Cb/(Lb*d/Af)
Cb is equal to 1

If a < b < c, use larger of Fb1 and

Fb3
If b > c, use larger of Fb2 and Fb3
Else, Use Fb3
*Always check with the maximum

Part 5. Compute the Allowable Bending

Stress - Weak Axis
Case 1. Compact
Fb = 0.75Fy
Case 1. NonCompact
Fb = 0.60Fy

Part 6. Check the Flexural Stress

Compte for actual fb
If fb < Fb, dimensions are "SAFE",
else, "Redesign"
*Redesign means select another
section

Part 7. Check the Shear Stress

*Actual Shear Stress
fv = Vu/dtw
*Allowable Shear Stress
Max Fv = 0.40Fy
If h/tw < 998/sqrt(Fy)
Fv = 0.40Fy
Else, we need to add stiffeners, and use
Fv = Fy*Cv/2.89
to solve for Cv,
Let j = h/tw
*Cv = 310264*kv/(Fy*j^2), Cv < 0.8
Cv = 500*sqrt(kv/Fy)/j, Cv > 0.8
Let z = a/h
*kv = 4 + 5.34/z^2, if z < 1
kv = 5.34 + 4/z^2, if z > 1
*a < h*(260/j)^2

If fv < Fv, the section is "SAFE", else

"Redesign"

Part 8. Check the deflection

*Actual Deflection
δx = 5*W*(Lb^4)/EIx
δy = 5*W*(Lb^4)/EIy
δactual = sqrt(δx^2 + δy^2)
W is the weight by the moment,
and section
*Allowable Deflection
δallowable = L/360

If δactual < δallowable, the section is "SAFE",

else "Redesign"
