RA LP Prerequisite

This document provides an overview of linear inequalities and systems of linear inequalities. It defines linear inequalities in two variables and explains that they can be represented graphically as shaded regions. It also discusses how systems of linear inequalities define a feasible region made up of all points that satisfy all the inequalities. Examples are provided of using Geogebra to graph linear inequalities and systems of inequalities and find the feasible regions. Readers are instructed to practice solving example problems from their textbook using Geogebra.

Linear
Inequalities
Review

Recall that a linear inequality in two variables x and y

takes any of the following forms

a x + by ≤ c a x + by ≥ c

a x + by < c a x + by > c

The representations of these inequalities are usually

in the form of a shaded region which may or may not
include a linear boundary.
Linear Inequalities

Linear
Inequalities

ax + by ≥ c
ax + by ≤ c
The graphical representation of any of these
inequalities looks like a region which may lie above or
below the line
a x + by = c .
This also includes all points on this line.

Shown on the right are representations of the

inequalities

(BLUE) x+y≥5

(RED) x+y ≤5
Do the coordinates of the point P(0,0) satisfy the inequality
x + y ≤ 5?
YES. When x = 0 and
y = 0, 0 + 0 = 0 IS
LESS THAN 5.

x+y≤5 Only points on the red

region including
those on the red line
satisfy the inequality.
Do the coordinates of the point P(0,0) satisfy the inequality
x + y ≥ 5?
NO.

When x = 0 and y = 0,
the sum 0 + 0 = 0 IS
NOT GREATER THAN
x+y≥5 OR EQUAL TO 5.

Only points on the blue

region including those
on the blue line satisfy
the inequality.
Linear Inequalities

Linear
Inequalities
ax + by > c
ax + by < c
The graphical representation of any of these x+y<5
inequalities looks like a region which may lie above or
below the line
a x + by = c .
This DOES NOT include any point on this line.
To indicate this, we use a broken line - - - - - - - -

Shown on the right is the graphical representation of

the inequality x + y < 5.

All points on the green region satisfy the inequality.

But it does NOT include points on the line
x + y = 5.

SOLUTIONS
A collection of two or more linear
inequalities is called a system of
linear inequalities. Our interest for
such system is the identification of the
set of all pairs of numbers (x, y) The set of all points on the xy-plane satisfying
all the inequalities in a system is called the
satisfying all inequalities in the system FEASIBLE REGION.
and this set has a graphical
representation too.
Find all points (x, y) in the plane
that satisfy the inequalities in the
system.

x+y≥2
x+y ≤8
2x + y ≤ 10
x≥0
y≥0

Feasible Region
In order to get the feasible region of a linear system, we use
GEOGEBRA to get the graphical representation of all points
satisfying the inequalities in the system. You may opt to
