Sizing shading devices
1. Graphical Method
 Using Shadow Angle Protractor
 Quick and easy for one or two façade openings
2. Numerical Method
 Using simple equations
 Quick and easy
 Can be done for more number of openings
3. Computer simulations
 Can be time intensive compared to the above two
methods
 Flexibility to assess several parameters.
 Better for complex geometries and numerous openings.

‘Mumbai’ weather data.
 Look at site level shading mask
 Turn the ‘project bldg’ layer on. Is the
building shaded at the desired time of the
year?
 Turn the ‘shading’ layer on. Does it need to be
resized?

1. Calculate depth of overhang to completely
shade a 3ft(h)x 4ft(w) window facing due
South in Mumbai (Lt 19N) using the shadow
angle protractor.
1. Overlay the worksheets from Exercise 2.1 and 2.3
2. Find out the VSA and HSA using the given Shadow
Angle Protractor handout.
3. Sketch the overhang to estimate the size.
