FTP
File Transfer Protocol is not just a protocol but also a service and an application. FTP provides the facility
to transfer files between two computers running on different operating systems such as UNIX,MS-DOS
and Windows.
FTP As An Application
FTP is an application for copying files.A client application can be run on the local computer to contact the
FTP server application on the remote computer. CuteFTP and Reachout are two very popular FTP
applications, which provide excellent user interfaces and a wide range of FTP commands and functions.
FTP As A Service
FTP is a service for copying files from one computer to another. A connection can be made from one
computer (Client) to another computer (Server) offering this service and files can be sent or received.
FTP As A Protocol
FTP is a protocol for copying files between two computers. The client and the server applications both use
it for communication to ensure that the new copy of the file is identical to the original.
Telnet
Telnet is both a TCP/IP application and a protocol for connecting a local computer to a remote computer.
The Telnet application acts as a terminal emulator. Whatever commands are typed into the local
computer are sent across the network for execution by the remote computer. Once connection
established ,it ask username and password to access remote computer.
Search Engine:
The Search engine is a program which is designed to enable the users to browse information
or content on World Wide Web. It helps retrieve the desired information in minimum time. It
allows you to input specific keywords or phrases and retrieves a list of items matching those
keywords and phrases. Thus, it does not provide information straight away; it just retrieves
pages which are related to keywords or other search terms. Some of the popular search
engines are Google, Bing, and Yahoo! Search.

1) Crawling
The search engines have the web crawler or spiders to perform crawling. The task of crawler
is to visit a web page,
ge, read it and follow the links to other web pages of the site. Each time
the crawler visits a webpage it makes a copy of the page and adds its URL to the index.
After adding the URL it regularly visits the sites like every month or two to look for updates
update
or changes.
2) Indexing
In this stage, the crawler creates the index of the search engine. The index is like a huge
book which contains a copy of eaeach
ch web page found by the crawler. If any webpage changes
the crawler updates the book with new content.
So, the index comprises URL of different webpages visited by the crawler and contains the
information collected by the crawler. This information is used by search engines to provide
the relevant answers to users for their queries. If a page is not added to the index it will not
be available to the users.
3) Retrieval
This is the final stage in which the search engine provides the most useful and relevant
answers in a particular order. Search engines use algorithms to improve the search results
so that only genuine information could rreach
each to the users, e.g. PageRank is a popular
algorithm used by search engines. It shifts through the pages recorded in the index and
shows those webpages on the first page of results that it thinks are the best.
