1. The student completed 10 math word problems involving systems of equations. Problems included ticket sales, football games, garden dimensions, mixing solutions, and investment amounts. 2. A second set of 7 additional word problems covered topics like ages, movie ticket prices, drink sales, swimming pool dimensions, and flyer delivery costs. 3. For each problem, the student defined variables, wrote the system of equations, and showed the step-by-step work to solve for the unknown values. Tables and diagrams were included for relevant problems.

sold, etc.). You may solve using substitution, or elimination. Show appropriate work.

1. A used book store also started selling used CDs and videos. In the first week, the store
sold a combination of 40 CDs and videos. They charged $4 per CD and $6 per video
and the total sales were $180. Determine the total number of CDs and videos sold.

Let x be CD and y be Videos.

4(X+y=40)
4x+6y=180

4x+4y=160
4x+6y=180

-2y=-20
Y=10

x+10=40
x=30

10 Videos and 30 CDs were sold.

2. At the end of the 2000-2001 football season, 31 Super Bowl games had been played
with the current two football leagues, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the
National Football Conference (NFC). The NFC won five more games than the AFC.
Determine the total number of wins by each conference.

Let x be AFC and Y be NFC

Y=x+5

X+y=31
X+5+x=31
2x+5=31
2x=26
X=13

Y=13+5
Y=18

The number of wins for AFC is 13 and NFC is 18

3. The length of Sally’s garden is 4 meters greater than 3 times the width. The perimeter of
her garden is 72 meters. Calculate the dimensions of Sally’s garden.

Let x be the width

Y=3x+4

2x+2y=72

2x+2(3x+4)=72

2x+6x+8=72

8x+8=72

8x=64

X=8

Y=3(8)+4

Y=24+4

Y=28

Ans ) width is 8 and length is 28

3. Two times a number added to another number is 25. Three times the first number
minus the other number is 20. Determine the two numbers.
Let x be the first number and y be the second number

2x+y=25
3x-y=20
x=9

2(9)+y=25
Y=7

The first number is 9 and the second number is 7

4. At a sale on winter clothing, Cody bought two pairs of gloves and four hats for $43.00.
Tori bought two pairs of gloves and two hats for $30.00. Calculate the prices of the
hats and gloves.

Let x be the cost of one pair of gloves and let y be the cost of a hat

2x+4y=43
2(2x+2y=30)
2x+4y=43
4x+4y=60

-2x+0y=-23
X=11.5

2(11.5)+4y=43
23+4y=43
4y=20
Y=5

Source: Prosper ISD mathematics

A pair of socks cost $11.5 and one hat costs $5

6. A chemistry lab needs to make 100 gallons of an 18% acid solution by mixing a 12% acid
solution with a 20% solution. Calculate the number of gallons needed of each solution.

x+y= 100
=> y= 100-x
0.12x+0.2y= 18
=> 0.12x+0.2(100-x)=18
=> 0.12x+20-0.2x= 18
=>0.08x= 2
=> x= 25
y=75

7. Anita is 4 years older than Basilio. Three times Anita’s age added to six times Basilio’s
2
age is 36. Calculate the age of each person.

Anita’s age is x and Basilo’s age is y

X=4.5+y

3x+6y=36

3(4.5+y)+6y=36

13.5+3y+6y=36

9y+13.5=36

9y=22.5

Y=2.5

Anita=7

Anita is 7 years old and Basilo is 2.5 years old

8. Gunther invested $10,000 in two mutual funds. One of the funds rose 6% in one year, and
the other rose 9% in one year. Gunther’s investment rose a total of $684 in one year.
Calculate the amount he invested in each fund.

Let amount invested in first fund be x and amount invested in second fund be y

(X+y=10000)

0.06x+0.09y=684

0.06(10,000 – y) + 0.09 = 684

600 – 0.06y +0.09y= 684

0.03y =84

Y= 2800

X= 7200

Guther invested $2800 in one mutual fund company and $7200 in another mutual
fund company

9. Tickets to a movie cost $7.25 for adults and $5.50 for students. A group of friends
purchased 8 tickets for $52.75. Determine the total number of adult and student tickets.

Let x be the number of adults and y be the number of children

7.25x+5.5y=52.75

5.5(X+y=8)

7.25x+5.5y=52.75

5.5x+5.5y=44

1.75x=8.75

X=5

5+y=8

Y=3

There are 5 adults and 3 children.

10. Carmel sells three different types of healthy drinks; herbal, vegetable and citrus fizz. One
hour she sells 4 herbal, 3 vegetable and 6 citrus fizz for $60.50. The next hour she sells 2
herbal, 4 vegetable and 3 citrus fizz. The third hour she sells 1 herbal, 2 vegetable and 4
citrus fizz. The total amount in cash sales for the three hours is $136.50. Carmel made $7
less in the third hour than she did in the second hour of sales. Determine her sales in the
fourth hour, if Carmel sells 2 herbal, 3 vegetable and 4 citrus fizz.

4h + 3v + 6c = 60.5
2h + 4v + 3c = 41.5
h + 2v + 4c = 34.5
If second hour sale is x, third hour is x – 7
x + x - 7 + 60.5 = 136.5
2x + 53.5 = 136.5
2x = 83
x = 41.5
Multiplying 3rd eqn by 2
2h + 4v + 8c = 79
2h + 4v + 3c = 41.5
5c = 37.5
c = 7.5
Substituting for c in eqn 1,2,3 and solving simultaneously
h = 0.5
v = 4.5
2h + 3v + 4c = 44.5

11. A rectangular swimming pool is surrounded by a path which is

enclosed by a pool fence. All measurements are in metres and are
not to scale in the diagram shown.
a) Write an expression for the entire fenced-off area.

Source: Prosper ISD mathematics

Area = 5(x + 4)

b) Write an expression for the area of the path surrounding the pool.

Area of pool = 2(x + 2)

Area of path = Area of fence – area of pool

= 5x + 20 – 2x – 4

= 3x + 16

c) If the area of the path surrounding the pool is 34 m2, find the dimensions of the
swimming pool.

3x + 16 = 34

x=6

Length of pool = 8m , Width = 2m

d) What fraction of the fenced-off area is taken up by the pool?

Fence area = 50 m2

Fraction =

12. Joseph wishes to have some flyers delivered for his grocery business. Post Quick quotes a
price of $200 plus 50 cents per flyer, while Fast Box quotes $100 plu 80 cents per flyer.
a) If Joseph needs to order 1000 flyers, which distributor would be cheaper to use?
b) For what number of fliers will the cost be the same for either distributor?

P(x) = 200 + 0.5x

F(x) = 100 + 0.8x

a) P(1000) = 700
F(1000) = 900
Post Quick would be cheaper
b) 200 + 0.5x = 100 + 0.8x
0.3x = 100
x
334 fliers
