Fleet Size For The Last Ten Years: Operators in The Indian Skies

Over the past decade, the fleet sizes of Indian airlines have grown significantly. The total number of aircraft increased from around 450 in 2001 to nearly 700 by 2007. In the last two years alone, over 160 new aircraft were added. Currently, Indian carriers have ordered over 500 new airplanes, representing investments of $50-55 billion. Fleet sizes are expected to continue expanding rapidly, with the total expected to surpass 1,200 aircraft by 2010. This growth has been driven by both national carriers like Air India as well as private operators such as Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines.

In the last two years there has been an unprecedented growth in fleet expansion. The number of
aircraft has increased by 60%. About 160 aircraft were registered in 2006; the figure was 97 in
2005 and 60 in 2004. In 2001 there were a total of 459 aircraft. Today, there are nearly 700
registered, air-worthy airplanes flying thousands of Indians daily.

There are more than 500 airplanes ordered, requiring funds to the tune of USD 50-55 bn. This
new expansion will bring in several benefits – like more flights, more routes, new technology,
safety standards, and probably cheaper fares for the Indian passenger.

Along with scheduled operators, there has been high growth among the non-scheduled operators
and private individuals. Even the chartered industry witnessed good growths with 122 aircraft,
and likely to go up to 160 this year.

The next three years will continue to see growth in fleet inductions from most of the carriers. By
2010, the total fleet of aircraft of Indian carriers is expected to cross 1,200 nos.
