INTRODUCTION
Background of Study:
Philippines is an agricultural country and blessed with natural resources. Filipinos should utilize
our resources for our needs and in order to achieve progress. Sadly, the more resources we use, the
more waste were being produced in which the country suffers from great pollution.
Our country is currently experiencing pollution, specifically because of inappropriate disposal of
waste. These wastes could be the main contributor of disease and be responsible in destroying our
nature.
Because of this, many researchers studied the ways and means on how to utilize these wastes
into something beneficial.
Boards are used for walls, blackboard, pin boards, pane board, etc. Different boards are
available in stores around our nation. But most boards are too pricey and many people cannot afford
it.
According to studies, a large amount of waste composition is biodegradables and majority of
it came from residential areas. This is why we focus more on utilizing biodegradable waste, more
specifically jackfruit peeling which are just thrown away after eating.
These peelings are one of the contributors in garbage especially if it’s in season. The peeling of
jackfruit contains fibrous, in which it has a property that can be turned into a board.
Previous studies revealed that most of the garbage in our community are non-biodegradables
like plastic and Styrofoam. The material contains chemicals which destroy the environment, particularly
when it is burned. This process hastens the depletion of ozone layer plus the smoke produced will be
the source of respiratory ailments. So in our project, we would like to use Styrofoam in a way that it
doesn’t need to be burned.
Our study aims to use jackfruit peelings and dissolve Styrofoam in gasoline in order to make a
good and cheap corkboard.
Statement of the Problem:
This study aims to produce a corkboard. from Jackfruit peelings and dissolved Styrofoam,
specifically it seek to determine whether;
A. Jackfruit peelings and dissolved Styrofoam can be a good and cheap component in
making a corkboard.
B. Which ratio; 2:1 and 1:2 Jackfruit peelings to is to dissolved Styrofoam has the best and
effective quality of a corkboard.
Significance of the Study:
The arising pollution of our country brought about the increasing utilization of natural resources
to gratify human wants. Our industry depends on the processing and manufacturing of woods, mainly
for construction and other purposes. In a growing population, one of the drawbacks of development
is its pollution. Pollution neither air, land, or water affects the environment and health of the people. To
help minimize pollution, this research studies utilizing jackfruit peelings and Styrofoam into a useful
products.
This study is purposely conceived by the researchers to find out if jackfruit peelings and dissolved
Styrofoam can be a good corkboard.
This research study is the answer to the global problem on wood shortage and the slowly removal
of forests.
We, the researchers, have known that these waste materials could be beneficial if these are
transformed or recycled into useful and more demand products.
This study can help a lot, especially nowadays, calamities often occur because of cutting down
trees. So instead of using wood for boards, jackfruit peeling and Styrofoam can be recycled.
The result of this study also minimize the problem of pollution in our country. Thus, preventing the
occurrence of diseases.
Furthermore, the result of this study helps alleviate the economic stability of our nation, since it
will give additional income.
As a result, this study will provide the needs of the society, since it gives a low-cost product and
help lessen the unwanted waste materials which greatly affects the environment.
METHODOLOGY
Preparation of Materials
A. Jackfruit Peelings
Jackfruit were gathered and chopped into small pieces. The chopped peelings were sun
dried.
B. Styrofoam
Styrofoam were collected and torn into different sized. Premium gas was used to dissolve the
Styrofoam. The proportion used was one liter of premium gas to 300 grams of Styrofoam.
These were mixed and the desired stickiness was obtained.
C. Molder
We use a plastic container as a temporary substitute for a molder.
Procedures
1. Preparation of Materials
2. Chopping of Jackfruit Peelings
3. Sun Drying
4. Dissolving the Styrofoam to the Premium Gasoline
5. Preparation of Mixture
6. Molding
7. Curing
Testing
We tried to use two different test to see the effectiveness and capacity of our corkboard.
First, we used the nail holding capacity. We hammered one nail in the corkboard and tested
how much weight it can hold.
Second, we immersed the corkboard in a water container. The corkboard were subjected
for one hour underwater. Then we lessen the remaining water from the previous corkboard
to find how many grams of water it can absorb.
RESULT AND
DISCUSSION
Data Presentation and Analysis
RATIO GRAMS OF WATER ABSORB GRAMS OF MASS HOLDED BY
THE NAIL
1:2 60 380.8 grams
2:1 42.3 406.0 grams
Our study shows that the Jackfruit having the ratio 2:1 has greater nail holding capacity than
the ratio 1:2. While the ratio 1:2 has a greater water absorption than the ratio 2:1.
Conclusion
Jackfruit peelings is made up of fibrous and rigid materials. These peelings, for more specific
made of cellulose. This polysaccharide is also found in woods.
When you mix Styrofoam (also called polystyrene) with gasoline, the Styrofoam breaks down. All
the air inside escapes, and it becomes a wet, gooey mess. If left out to dry, it gets hard again, but not
like before, without the air - it resembles plastic.
The result on water absorption test showed that the corkboard having the ratio 1:2 has the
greatest water absorption than 2:1.
After conducting the nail holding capacity test, we found out that the ratio 2:1 is much durable
and stronger than the ratio 1:2.
We therefore conclude that jackfruit peeling mixed with the dissolve Styrofoam and when cured
well, it can be a good and cheap corkboard.
Recommendation
We recommended to use other type of fruits in the Artocarpus family, for they are rich in fibrous
in which can be used as corkboard. We also recommend to use other type of solvent to dissolve the
Styrofoam.
We also recommend to conduct other test to determine the effectively of the wallboard and
to compare it to other commercial corkboards.
Furthermore, we recommend to further study on the jackfruit and dissolved Styrofoam in
producing other types of boards.
