Compare Contrast Lesson Plan

The document provides a lesson plan for teaching students about hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. It includes an introduction where students discuss what they know about hurricanes. The activity has students watch two videos about the hurricanes and compare them using a Venn diagram. They then share their diagrams and discuss inferences about hurricanes.

Primary Source Lesson Plan

Standard:
- K-12.G.3 Students will recognize the characteristics of the processes that shape
places and regions.
o 4.G.3.1 Describe how natural and human conditions shape places and regions

Intro: Today during class we will be looking at different hurricanes that have happened in the
United States history. Can anyone tell me what a hurricane is? (wait for responses) Yes, a
hurricane is a tropical storm with extreme winds and rain. Can anyone tell me about any
hurricanes they remember or anything they know about hurricanes? Turn to your partner and
discuss. (wait for responses and discuss) The two hurricanes that we will be focusing on are
Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Sandy, have any of you ever heard of those hurricanes? I bet if
you ask your moms and dads about those hurricanes they can tell you what they know about
them.

Activity: I have two videos for you to watch about the hurricanes and while you are watching I
would like you to compare and contrast the hurricanes using your Venn Diagram chart.
Remember how we use the Venn Diagram chart we have one circle for each hurricane and where
they intersect will be their similarities. Please break into partners and get started on the videos.
Raise your hands if you have any questions for me.

Hurricane Sandy as it Happened: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeaG1jRLIBw

The students will watch both videos and compare and contrast them as they watch using their
Venn diagrams and working with their partner.

After working with their partner and watching both videos we will come together as a class and I
will fill out a Venn Diagram on the board with the similarities and differences that the students
wrote in their own diagrams.

Conclusion: (all think pair share) Looking at our Venn Diagram can you make any inferences
about what all hurricanes have? What do you think was special about these hurricanes? What do
you want to know more about? How did your Venn Diagram help you compare and contrast?

Assessment: I will collect the students Venn Diagrams to see how they understood the lesson.
