Experiment 2: Study of 3-Phase Induction Motor Starting Transients Submitted By: Group 1 (Tuesday Batch)

The document summarizes an experiment to study starting transients of a 3-phase induction motor using different starting methods. It includes the objective, motor nameplate ratings, descriptions of the direct online (DOL), star-delta, and autotransformer starting methods. Observations from no-load and blocked rotor tests are reported. Star-delta starting results show lower starting currents compared to DOL starting. Conclusions state that methods other than DOL help preserve motor insulation. Precautions for loading and applying voltage to the machines are also provided.

EXPERIMENT 2 : STUDY OF 3-PHASE INDUCTION MOTOR STARTING TRANSIENTS

Submitted By : Group 1 (Tuesday Batch)

OBJECTIVE:

a) Study of 3-phase Induction Motor Starting Transients with the following Starting methods and
record current transients and compare the following:
i. DOL starting
ii. Y - starting
iii. Autotransformer starting
b) Measure the parameters of the induction machine by conducting no-load and blocked rotor
tests at rated voltage and at rated current.
c) Simulate Squirrel Cage Induction Motor in software with the above starting methods.

NAME PLATE RATINGS:

kW: 3.7
Rpm: 1430
Volts: 415
Amps: 7.50
Hz: 50
IP: 55
%eff: 84

STARTING METHODS:
DOL STARTING:
1. Connect the Induction motor as per the circuit diagram in fig3
2. Make auto transformer voltage to machine rated value. 3. Note down the values of starting
current in ammeter.

STAR-DELTA STARTING:
1. Connect the Induction motor as per the circuit diagram in fig4
2. Connect the star delta starter kit in between supply and motor.
3. Make auto transformer voltage to machine rated value and press the green button in the kit.
4. Note down the values of starting current in the ammeter.

AUTO TRANSFORMER STARTING:

1. Connect the Induction motor as per the circuit diagram in fig3
2. Make auto transformer voltage to machine rated value.
3. Note down the values of starting current in the ammeter.

Circuit Diagram:
OBSERVATIONS:

No Load Test:

P = 251 W Q = 3.46 kVAR S = 3.45 kVA PF = 0.12

V = 421 V I = 4A
Brake Time = 7.01 sec

Blocked Rotor Test:

P = 0.57 kW Q = 0.9 kVAR S = 1.07 kVA PF = 0.54

V = 82 V I = 7.45 A
Brake Time = 7.01 sec

Star - Delta Starting :

Steady State : V = 417.1 V I = 4.5 A

Star Connection :
V = 240 V I_starting = 8 A I_steadystate = 1.33 A

Delta Connection :
V = 417.1 V I_starting = 11 A I_steadystate = 4.5 A

CONCLUSIONS:
As is expected theoretically, we observe lesser values of starting line currents in the different
methods of starting other than DOL. This helps preserve the insulation and long term
performance of the motor.

PRECAUTIONS:
1. Care must be taken while loading the machine, i.e., current should not exceed the rated value
of either of the machines.
2. Machine should be given voltage through a VARIAC slowly to avoid high starting current

EXPERIMENTAL QUIZ:
1. Why Direct on Line starting method is not preferred?
Ans . Because the starting current is very high (8-10 times rated current).

2. Which ratio of auto transformer will give the starting performance same as in star delta
method and why?
Ans. 1:1.732 will give the same starting performance. This is a result of the correlation between
line and phase voltage values in star - delta connections.

3. What is the relation between starting currents of DOL, star delta starter and auto transformer
start?
Ans. (Considering line currents) I_star_delta = ⅓ I_dol I_autotransformer = 1/n^2 I_dol

4. What is the relation between starting Torques of DOL, star delta starter and auto transformer
start?
Ans . T_star_delta = ⅓ T_dol T_autotransformer = 1/n^2 T_dol
