ABSTRACT

In today’s scientific world, engineering has given us an enormous necessary device, which
changes the way of lifestyle of human-beings. But in a way to preserve power and human effort
we have to develop more economical and more efficient machineries for the related work.

To design, develop and implement multipurpose machine is our goal. This project further
utilized to reduce time of drilling and grinding process. So we are planning to make a machine
which will run by a single motor and will provide dual work by drilling and grinding.

This project can be directly used for its application i.e. drilling and grinding in minimum, time.
By this project we will reduce 50% production time .This project is mainly design and develop
for reducing production time and increase production rate.

3
INTRODUCTION

The increase in power demand and day per day increasing the cost of machineries with demand
provides the high cost in market. So, the idea of our project is to combine the dual work obtain
through drilling and grinding through a single input by motor.

So in our project we are using a drilling head and grinder which we will try to run through a
single input source by motor.

Drilling is a cutting process that uses a drill bit to cut a hole of circular cross-section in solid
materials. The drill bit is usually a rotary cutting tool, often multi point. The bit is pressed against
the work piece at rotated at rates from 100 to 1000 rpm. This forces the cutting edge against the
work piece, cutting off chips from the hole as it is drilled.

The grinding machine consist of as bed with a fixture to guide and hole the work piece, and
power-driven grinding wheel spinning at the required speed. The speed is determined by the
wheel’s diameter and manufacturer’s rating. The grinding head can travel across a fixed wrok
piece, or the workpiece can be moved while the gring head stays in a fixed position.

4
OBJECTIVES

Reduces production time.

Increases production rate.

Size is compact and requires less space.

Less maintenance.

Multiple operations on single machine.

5
LITERATURE REVIEW

Before starting our work we have undergone through many research papers which indicates that
for a production based industries machine installation is a tricky taskas many factorbeing
associated with it such as power consumption (electricity bill per m/c) maintenance cost, no. of
units produced per m/c i.e. capacity of machine, time consumption and many more.

Some research papers which have led us to approach to the idea of a multipurpose machine
which may give solution todrilling and grinding process at one time.

Grinding machines remove material from the work piece by abrasion, which can generate
substantial amounts of heat. To cool the work piece so that it does not overheat and go outside its
tolerance , grinding machines incorporate a coolant. The coolant also benefits the machinist as
the heat generated may cause burns. In high-precision grinding machines (most cylindrical and
surface grinders), the final grinding stages are usually set up so that they remove about 200 nm
(less than 1/10000 in) per pass - this generates so little heat that even with no coolant, the
temperature rise is negligible.

Drill bits are cutting tools used to remove material to create holes, almost always of circular
cross-section. Drill bits come in many sizes and shape and can create different kinds of holes in
many different materials. In order to create holes drill bits are attached to a drill, which powers
them to cut through the workpiece, typically by rotation. The drill will grasp the upper end of a
bit called the shank in the chuck.

Drill bits come in standard sizes, described in the drill bit sizes article. A comprehensive drill bit
and tap size chart lists metric and imperial sized drill bits alongside the required screw tap sizes.
There are also certain specialized drill bits that can create holes with a non-circular cross-section.

6
PROBLEM STATEMENT

To design and development of MULTIPURPOSE MACHINE, a structure whiuch is design for

the purpose of multi operation i.e. drilling and grinding.

PROBLEM INDENTIFICATION

This machine perform multipurpose operation at same time with required speed and this
m/c is automatec which is controlled or operated by motor which is run with the help of
current.
This model of multi operational m/c is can be used industries and domestic operation
which can performed drilling, and grinding metal and wooden surface.

7
BLOCK DIAGRAM

8
CONSTRUCTION

The operation type of machine will be manual.

Maximum drilling capacity of machine will be 3to 6 mm.

Spindle travel of machine will be 60 to 40 mm.

Table size is 200*200 mm

Distance from spindle to table 150 mm.

Column diameter 80mm .

Grinding wheel diameter 150 mm .

Motor - ½ HP and 0.18 kw.

Bevel gears.

Belts .

Pulleys .

9
WORKING

As per project,

The power will be provided to the motor.

As per the requirement the operater can change the output of the by machine by belt adjustment
which may run grinder wheel or drill.

So, for grinder as the power is start it will run the motor and through the motor it will runthe
pullys by means of belt and one can grind surface for the use.

And for the drilling machin, ajust the belt connection then start the motor and the one can bore
the surface of plywood by means of drill through head.

CONCLUSION

Multipurpose machine is derived from turning lathe which has been a well established
industrial processes offering attractive capabilities for handling work piece of various
length to be used at micro level .

We have learnt a lot from this project about types of components, machine and how are
they used in mechanical workplaces in industries. Moreover this project gave us a good
experience of purchasing materials from market and increased our surveying capabilities.
