Definition of Recount Text
A recount text is a text which tells about something that happened in the past. The
details in a recount can include what happened, who was involved, where it took place, when
it happened and why it occurred.
Recount text can be factual information, such as a news story or procedural information,
such as telling someone how you built something or personal information, such as a family
holiday or your opinion on a subject.

Generic Structure of Recount Text


Orientation : It gives the readers the background information needed to understand the text,
such as who was involved, where it happened, and when it happened.
Events : A series of events, ordered in a chronological sequence.
Re-orientation : A personal comment about the event or what happened in the end.

The Function Of Recount


Because recount text is a type of text that recounts events or events experienced in the past,
the function of the recount text itself is to attract the attention of the reader and provide
entertainment to the reader.

Types of Recount Text


- Personal Recount This type of recount text tells a personal experience.
- Factual Recount Recount text type that contains reports of events that actually happened,
such as trial reports on police reports, historical stories, and science.
- Imaginative This type of recount text serves to tell imaginative stories (essays).

The Characteristics / Language Feature of Recount Text:


Using the simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past perfect
continuous tense.
Using temporal sequence, e.g. On Saturday. On Monday, On Sunday
Focus on specific participant, e.g. I (the writer)
Using the conjunctions, such as: then, before, after, etc.
Using action verd, e.g. went, stayed

Losing My Phone
Two days ago I was in the bus station to pick my brother up for his

I was playing my phone all the time in that afternoon. I sat in the bench
right near the ticket keeper. Then, I bought a bottle of water across the
ticket keeper. I forgot to take my phone with me when I bought water.
Event Then I saw my brother out of the bus. I ran to him and we were about to
go. That time I thought I lost my phone. My brother told me to check it
in the place before. I came back and the ticket keeper told me that he
saved the phone for me. I thanked him and we said our good bye.
Re-orientation
I was afraid that I would lose my phone. Lucky I still had it back.

Shopping With My Sister
I went to the market yesterday with my sister, my mom wasn’t at home yesterday so
she told my sister and me to buy vegetable in the market.
My sister told me to write down any vegetable that I wanted to buy. I did it then gave
it to her, we were ready to go ten minutes after that. My sister told me everything about things
in the market. She told me which one is the fresh one of the vegetables, and why did the
market was crowded, and also how to bargain with the seller.
I was so happy to be with my sister in the market. She told me everything until I
understood how to buy something in the market.
