Estimating Guide
BATTERBOARD
1. To estimate the lumber to be used as batterboard for the layout, compute the lineal meter of
the structure all around giving an allowance or margin of 1.00. Count also the number of
stakes to be used. Multiply the number of stakes by 1.2 (length of stake) and add the sum to
the first lineal meter of the structure. The total lineal meter change to lineal foot. Then
compute the board depending to the size of the lumber to be used as batterboard (2x2 or
2x3).
2. To estimate the nails to be used, divide the total board foot by 1000 then multiplied by factor
15 to get number of kilos. If by keg, divide the total board foot by factor 2500 equals keg of
nails.
3. To estimate guide wire #12 to be used in layouting, divide the total board foot by 4000 to
obtain roll of wire.
EXCAVATION
To estimate the volume of excavation, compute the area to be excavated then multiply by the
depth.
A¹ + A² x depth or length
= cu. mt.
2
BACKFILL
To estimate backfilling or gravel bed, multiply the width, the length and the depth or thickness
(w x l x d)
If the backfilling will be compacted add 10% for compaction and 3% for wastage.
CONCRETE
To obtain bag of cement, cu.m. of sand and cu.m. of gravel, determined the class of mixture or
psi required. Then cu.m. of concrete multiply by the given factor of mixture.

ASPHALT
1. To obtain asphalt: one (1) metric ton of asphalt the average is 8.78 s.m.
2. Total area x 8.78 = metric ton of asphalt.
3. To obtain prime coating (liquid) total area (s.m.) divide by 400 equals number of drums (area
divided by 400 = drum) or one (1) gal. of liquid prime coat the coverage is 64 sf or 6.00 s.m.
CONE PAVEMENT
BASE COARSE
1. To obtain base coarse for 6.00 wide x 0.20 road compacted every k.m. use factor 1200 cu.m.
(hauled) in place (quarry) for every k.m. use 1,260 cu.m. for loose hauled: use 1,400 cu.m.
2. 3.00 wide x 0.20 road: compacted (hauled) use 600 cu.m. for quarry: use 630 cu.m.; for
loose hauled: use 700 cu.m.
To obtain subgrade or road bed of 9.00 x 0.15 road using common borrow: compacted (hauled)
use 1,350 cu.m. for every km. For quarry: use 1,500 cu.m. for every km; for loose (hauled) use
2,010 cu.m. for every km.
GROUTED RIPRAP
To estimate riprap grouting vol. of riprap x 0.15 or 0.30 = vol. of concrete. To obtain cement:
vol. x factor. For sand: vol. x factor or area x 0.425 = cement and area x 0.03 = sand.

6” CHB: Area x .0008 = roll of wire
8” CHB: Area x .0009 = roll of wire
or total kg. or rebars divide by factor 3000 equals roll of wire
PLASTERING
1. To estimate mortar for plastering of walls, compute the volume to be plastered then multiply
by number of face.
For 1” thk. : Area x .025 = volume
½” thk. : Area x .0127 = volume
¾” thk. : Area x .0009 = volume
2. To obtain cement : volume x 13 = bags
3. To obtain sand : volume x 1.06 = cu.m.
4. To obtain cement by area : Area x .33 = bags
5. To obtain sand by area : Area x .03 = cu.m.

FORMWORKS
FLOOR JOIST
1. To estimate floor joist at .30 q.e. : compute the area then multiply by the factor for each
size.
3. Another procedure in computing the floor joist is to count the pieces of joist indicated in the
floor framing plan, then count the board foot.

T & G FLOORING
1. Compute the lineal meter of spread then multiply by the factor to get the number of pieces
to be used.
WOODEN STUDS
1. To estimate wooden studs at .60 o.c. compute the area of the sidings of partition, then
multiply by the factor of the lumber to be used.
S-CUT SIDINGS
1. To estimate siding, compute the lineal meter of spread then multiply by the factor.
1. To estimate plywood double walling, compute by area of both side of the wall, then divide
the total area by 2.88 to obtain pieces of plywood.

ALUMINUM TEE RUNNER
1. To obtain pieces of aluminum, the runner, divide the length and width by .60 or 1.20. Then
multiply no. of spread on the length and width.
2. For #12 guidewire and the wire hangers: total area multiply by 6.54 divide by 4000 equals
roll.
ROOFING
1. To estimate G.I. sheet roofing by area, compute the area in flat then add the pitch factor
(the sum of 1 & 2 percentage) the total area is the slotted area of the roof.
2. To divide the slotted area by factor from the table of GI sheet coverage and the answer is
the pieces of sheets to be used.
3. Another procedure: length of spread divide by .67 if the length is in meter and 27” if the
length is in feet, then multiply by the no. of lapping of row.
For Strap:
Length of spread or lineal meter divide by 2.10 = ridge roll, valley roll or flashing
6. For copper rivet: no. of joint multiply by 8 then divide by 50 = no. of box of copper rivet.
