Application Note Stainless Steel

Stainless steels contain at least 11% chromium and their microstructure and properties depend on their alloy composition. There are four main categories: ferritic, martensitic, austenitic, and duplex stainless steels. Secondary steelmaking processes like vacuum induction melting are used to reduce impurities and produce high quality ingots. The corrosion resistance of stainless steels comes from the formation of a passive oxide layer on their surface. Different types and applications of stainless steels are described based on their alloying elements and properties.

Stainless steels are corrosion resistant steels
with high chromium and nickel contents. Fer-
ritic and stainless steels are soft, respectively
