Glossary of Editing Terms
Media Browser: This is your window for locating media. You can import (link)
media directly into your project by right clicking on media and choosing “import.”
Media: Any video, audio, or images that you are using in your project. Media is not
the same as clips; clips reference media. In PPro, the source video (or audio) that
you are working with is not self-contained in your PPro project. This means that
PPro is referencing video that is located on a hard drive or desktop. The video that is
referenced is called your media; the things that reference it are your clips and
sequences.
Project Window:
This is your project’s directory. Any video or audio clip you capture or import,
sequences or bins you create, will show up with the appropriate little icon in this
window. In this window you can organize & name your clips, sequences, & bins.
Bin: A bin is basically just a folder in your browser. You create bins to help you
organize your footage and sequences. Some typical bins you might have are “Loads”
(for master clips), “Selects” (for subclips or sequences of your favorite footage from
your maser clips), and “Sequences” or “Cuts” (for your sequences). You might also
have “Camera A” and “Camera B.” rather than “Loads.” “Stills” and “Audio” are also
good bins to make.
Clip: A clip is simply a piece of video (or audio). When you digitize or import a piece
of video into PPro, that clip is called a master clip. You can choose sections of your
master clip to copy as a new clip called a subclip. This is frequently done to organize
the best moments in your footage & make them easy to find.
Sequence: A sequence is the chain of clips you put together in the timeline to create
your edited piece.
Timeline: This is the window in which you can see your sequences of clips that
create your edited piece. In the timeline window you view your clips as strips on
their respective tracks. You will typically have at least one video track (V1) & two
audio tracks (A1 & A2), but you can create more tracks (either video or audio), as
you need them.
Source Window/Viewer: This is the left upper window where you can preview your
clips and set in and out points before putting them into your timeline. Just double
click on a clip in your project window or single click on a clip on your timeline to
view it in the source window.
Program Monitor/Canvas: This is the upper right window in which you view the
actual video sequence that you have put together in your timeline. This is where you
watch the video that you are creating.
Timecode: Video is a sequence of still frames. Each frame of video, on a tape or in an
editing system, has its own discreet timecode number. This number is notated by
hour, minute, second, and frame (HH:MM:SS:FF).
