Squeeze Calculations: A - Upper &lower Zakum Fields Thmamamas & Arab D3, D4, D5

The document discusses squeeze calculations for acidizing jobs in the Upper and Lower Zakum Fields and Umm Shaif Field. It provides equations for calculating the volume of carbonate dissolved based on the rock type, acid concentration, and other parameters. For limestone formations like Thamama, the calculation is based on the reaction of HCl with CaCO3. For dolomite formations like Arab-D2, the reaction is with CaMg(CO3)2. Example calculations are shown for 15% and 28% HCl on limestone and dolomite. The volume of matrix dissolved depends on the density of the rock and porosity. Zakum wells use a density of 2.71 g/cm

Squeeze Calculations
The volume of carbonate dissolved depends on rock type, whether limestone of stone or dolomite:-
(a) For Dolomite
4 HCl + CaMg(CO3)2 --> CaCl2 + MgCl2 + 2H2O + 2CO2
(b) For Limestone
2HCl + CaCO3 --> CaCl2 + H2O + CO2
An example calculation, using 15% HCl and limestone is as follows:

Molar strength of 15% HCl by wt. HCl = 4.412 gmol/litre

= 16.7 gmol/gallon
For limestone, 2 moles HCl reacts with 1 mole CaCO3,
therefore
For 1 gallon of acid (16.7 moles), 8.35 moles CaCO 3 will react.
1 mole CaCO3 = 0.100 kg.
8.35 moles = 0.835 kg.
= 1.841 lbs.
An example calculation, using 28% HCl and dolomite is as follows:-

Molar strength of 28% by wt. HCl = 8.745 gmol/litre

= 33.1 gmol/gallon.
For dolomite, 4 moles HCl reacts with 1 mole CaMg(CO 3)2,
therefore
For 1 gallon of acid (33.1 moles), 8.276 moles CaMg(CO 3)2 will react.
1 mole CaMg(CO3)2 = 0.184 kg.
8.276 moles = 1.525 kg.
= 3.363 lbs.
Similarly for other Acid Strengths:-
Percent HCL Lbs. Carbonate dissolved
per gal Acid
Dolomite Limestone
5% bwt. 0.539 0.585
10% bwt. 1.104 1.198
15% bwt. 1.696 1.841
28% bwt. 3.363 3.649
The matrix volume of rock dissolved depends on the rock density and porosity:
Dolomite = 2.87 S.G.
Limeston (Calcite) = 2.71 S.G.
Therefore, if 1000 lbs of dolomite have been dissolved, the carbonate volume
dissolved is:
1000 = 5.6 cu.ft
2.87 x 62.4
If the porosity is 22%:
Vol. of matrix dissolved = 5.6 = 7.2 cu.ft
(1-0.22)
Generally speaking, the carbonate reservoir formations of Zakum (Thamama)
and Umm-Shaif (Arab) are as follows:

Zakum : Limestone, CaCO 3

Umm-Shaif : Dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2
For Zakum wells therefore, a carbonate density of 2.71 S.G should be used
to calcuate matrix volume, where as Umm-Shaif wells should use 2.87 S.G.
