Exercise No. 2 – 100 pts.

I.Exploratory Essay
1. What is Remedial Reading? (5points)
Remedial reading is a change in instruction that helps remedy a
weakness in the area of reading. It is a highly effective short-term intervention
of tutoring struggling readers in both an individualized and small group
setting.
2. How can we diagnose the reading difficulties among learners? (5 points)
A diagnosis begins with the gathering of information gained
from interviews, observations and testing. This information is collected
by various members of a team that includes the classroom teacher(s),
speech/language pathologist, educational assessment specialist(s), and
medical personnel (if co-occurring difficulties related to development,
health or attention are suspected).
3. Design an Assessment Task for each type of reading – selective, perceptive,
interactive, and extensive. (20 points)
Selective Reading- Tasks at this level have a combination of form- focused
and meaning-focused objectives but with more
emphasis on meaning. Assessment task is Cloze task and Scanning.
Extensive reading - It involves somewhat longer texts. Journal articles,
technical reports, longer essays, short stories and books fall into this category.
Reading of this type of discourse almost always involves a focus on meaning
using mostly top-down processing, with only occasional use of targeted
bottom-up strategy. Task can be short answer task, scanning and ordering.

II. Explanatory TRUE or FALSE Test


Directions: determine whether the following statements are TRUE or FALSE. If
each states a fact, write TRUE at its end; if it tells a false information, write FALSE
and justify your answer. (5 points each)
1. The most essential skill for success in all educational contexts remains a skill of
paramount importance as we create assessments of general language ability.
TRUE
2. The assessment of reading ability ends with the measurement of comprehension.
FALSE. The assessment of reading does not end with the measurement of
comprehension, rather it start from there and it continues with applying different
strategies to assess the reader.
3. Efficient readers have to know what their purpose is in reading a text, the strategies
for accomplishing that purpose, and how to retain information. TRUE
4. Scoring is only easy in responding because of its subjectivity. FALSE, because
scoring is difficult in responding because of its subjectivity.
5. A judgment on what the author has said is popularly known as reaction. TRUE

1. Types of Reading Difficulties under Word Recognition (20)
a. Word-by-word reading caused by over dependence on phonics,
failure to recognize sight words instantly, failure to comprehend,
or may be a bad habit.
b. Incorrect phrasing caused by insufficient word recognition and
comprehension.
c. Poor pronunciation caused by weak in phonics or reader is with
hearing defects.
d. Omission caused by insufficient word recognition
e. Repetitions caused by poor word recognition, poor word analysis or
development of bad habit.
f. Failure to develop a strong enough visual image for the word and
students immaturity.
g. Substitution are caused by carelessness in reading.
h. Basic sights word not known.
i. Sight vocabulary not up to grade level.
j. Lack knowledge of the alphabet.
k. Unable to use context clues.
l. Consonants and vowel sound not known.
m. Lacks desirable structural analysis.
n. Inadequate vocabulary and comprehension.
2. Factors that Influence Reading Proficiency (3)
a. Ineffective and untrained teachers
b. Lack of instructional materials
c. Researcher have shown that pupil: who were read to when they were 2
years old often successful readers.
3. Characteristics of Poor Readers (7)
a. Lack of comprehension skills
b. Wrong pronunciations
c. Retarded readers
d. More word miscues
e. Learners with speech difficulties
B. Enumerate and explain:
Three (3) Genres of Reading (5 points each)
ACADEMIC READING are reading which include reading of General interest
articles like in magazines and newspapers Technical reports(e.g., lab reports),
professional journal articles, Reference material, Textbooks, Essays, papers, Test
directions, Editorials and opinion writing.
JOB- RELATED READING are genres of reading like for examples Messages(e.g.,
phone messages) Letters/emails Memos, Reports, Schedules, labels, signs,
announcements Forms, applications, questionnaires Financial documents (bills,
invoice) Directories(telephone, office) Manuals, directions.
PERSONAL READING are genres of reading where in we do it in our usual routine
like for example, reading Newspapers and magazines Letters, emails, greeting cards,
invitations Messages, notes, lists, Schedules(train, bus, plane), Recipes, menus, maps,
calendars, Advertisements, Novels, short stories, jokes, drama, and poetry.
