This document contains instructions for a mathematics examination covering various calculus topics: 1. The first question asks students to show that a given sequence is Cauchy and find the limit of another sequence. 2. The second question involves finding the Maclaurin series expansion of a function and showing another function is strictly increasing. 3. The third question covers limits of series, including showing the limit of terms goes to zero and that the square of a convergent series converges. 4. The fourth question states Lagrange's mean value theorem and uses it to prove Rolle's theorem, and asks about applying Rolle's theorem to a piecewise function. 5. The remaining questions cover

Course: MA 101 Course name: Mathematics I Time: 3 hours Full marks: 50
Instructions: All parts of a question should be answered at one place.Using more number of
additional sheets will not fetch you more marks. ±∞ should not be treated as a real
number. Anybody found doing this will be penalized. Each question carries 5 marks.

then show that (xn ) is a Cauchy sequence.
(b) Show that the sequence (xn ) is convergent and find lim xn , where x1 = 1 and xn+1 =
√ n→∞

2. (a) Find the MacLaurin’s series expansion of f (x) = sin2 x.

(b) Show that if f ′ (x) > 0 then the function is strictly increasing.
