The Unconscious Mind
All learning, behaviour and change happens at the level of the unconscious mind. Even when
we force our change with willpower (conscious mind)… the reason it takes 21 days to install is
that this is how long it can take your unconscious mind to integrate that this new behaviour is
important to you.

The Programming
The unconscious mind runs the programs of your life – much like a computer. Most of the
programming of the core level of your unconscious mind – beliefs and limits – happens in the
years from 4 – 12 years old. When you successful change a behaviour, you are changing that
programming. You can edit that programming to create instant change.

The Critical Faculty

At around the age of 9, our mind installs the ability and desire to distinguish between reality
and fiction. In order to access the unconscious mind, we need to use hypnosis to get past the
Critical Faculty and install suggestions and imagery for change.
Getting past this critical faculty is done through relaxation, confusion, imagination, shock or
surprise. Deepening the hypnosis just requires acceptance and cooperation of the client.

Visualization of Success - Reticular Activating System (RAS)

The unconscious mind is very symbolic and does not make a distinction between fact and
fiction. What we can visualize happening, the UM believes to be true – whether we are
imagining catastrophe or magnificence – and then will work towards making it happen.
RAS Reticular Activating System – what we place in our RAS, it looks to prove – finding
opportunities to make the imagination true. This is actually the core science behind why “The
Secret” does work to some level.

Meditation, Mindfulness and Hypnosis

Each of these practices is in the press and our awareness these days. So what are the
differences and similarities?
All three of these practices create measurable biological change in your brain through adding
resources. Any time we can add a brain path of resource rather than problem and re-fire this
resource we build neurology.
When during hypnosis, we fire up a problem state then activate a resource state, we can
actually physically change the brain path of the problem to include the new resource. (As per
Hebb’s Law – a simplified version of which states “neurons that wire together, fire together”.)
Meditation is a passive practice of emptying the mind and relaxation.

705-896-1370 http://chercunningham.com [email protected]

Hypnosis is an active practice of reprogramming the mind which may or may not include
relaxation.
Mindfulness is an active set of attitudes that one brings to become more present in the current
moment.
Each of these practice have biological results – re-wiring resources into the mind and changing
brain structure in a measurable way.

Hypnosis
All hypnosis is self hypnosis. Your unconscious mind is the real hypnosist. The hypnotherapist is
just a tour guide to get you there and install the suggestions that you desire. Hypnosis thus is a
partnership between coach and client. Without that co-operation, there is no hypnosis. The
client is always in full control, can hear everything and can wake at any time they feel the need.
Anyone can be hypnotized – it does not require you be gullible – intelligent, creative people are
the best subjects.
Imagination is the key to this practice. And that being said, imagination is what allows you to
access the unconscious, highly symbolic part of your mind. Different methods will work better
for different people so approach this with a sense of curiosity, positive expectation and fun. All
that is required is a positive attitude and a decision to play along.
Repeated practice allows you to go into hypnosis easier and deeper each time. The deeper you
go, the more profound the results you can achieve.

Value
Telling the unconscious mind what you want to have happen directly. Re-writing a program that
no longer works for you whether it is a habit, addiction, belief or anxiety. Each of these is simply
a program running in your brain and that means that you can edit them. Build healthy, wealthy
and happy from the inside out.

Physical Relaxation – Mental Relaxation

Hypnosis goes beyond relaxing the body into relaxing the mind actually producing a change in
brain waves to Theta Waves. Various techniques can lead the client into this deeper state –
imagining something about their body so strongly that it becomes true for instance – eyelid,
arm and body catalepsy are all tests of hypnosis that deepen the hypnosis. As the client
cooperates, the unconscious mind makes manifest the suggest which then deepens the
hypnosis.
Visualization of walking deeper down stairs or valleys also can be used to create mental
relaxation as it engages a part of the mind that is unconscious thought.

2 aspects: Success imagery and suggestions

Success imagery builds emotion and reality to the result. It may be used as part of the induction
and deepener or just prior to and after suggestions are delivered. This must use the client’s
words, vision, and phrases that represent their success. Positive imagery only.

Suggestions are rapidly delivered instructions stated directly to the unconscious mind.
Suggestions should be delivered 3 x 3 ways.

Suggestions
Ecological, using the client’s words, hopes, goals, ideas – visual, auditory, kinesthetic details
that resonate with the client.

Building Suggestions
There is a simple process to achieving all of your results, that starts with deciding what you truly
want. Your vision leads to your goals, goals lead to your results, resources will be needed to
reach those results.

Vision – the 5 Whys

NLP SMART Goals

In NLP, goals are generally referred to as “outcomes” and an outcome is the answer to the NLP
question “What do you want?” An outcome is something that you intend to accomplish or
attain. Traditional goal setting in business talks about SMART goals – ones that are Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timed. NLP adds extra dimensions through the process of
setting well-formed outcomes (examples shown in red below) that ensure you achieve your
SMART goals.

Specific

Meaningful to You
M Measurable

All areas of your life A As if now

R

Designing Your NLP SMART Goals

Setting yourself a NLP SMART goal or well-formed outcome helps you get from where you are
now – having a glimmer of a dream – to achieving your dream.

How is a NLP SMART goal different from other goal-setting processes? Some of the advantages
of incorporating well-formed outcomes include:
✓ You get to understand the hidden reasons behind your desires and fears
relating to this specific goal or outcome.
✓ You recognize resources you have, such as skills or people to help you,
and also resources that you may need to develop or find.
✓ Most importantly, by engaging all your senses, the goal becomes so
compelling that you can only achieve it.
Before you work through the seven steps to a NLP SMART goal or well-formed outcome in the
section below, consider the points here that can make your existing ideas even “smarter” and
help you gain more clarification about what you really want.
✓ Do an ecology check: An ecological goal in NLP terms means that the
outcome works in all areas of your life. For example, if your goal is to be a
millionaire but doing so means neglecting your emotional needs and
ignoring your family, then chances are the goal isn’t really ecological.
✓ Set the context: In making a NLP SMART goal or well-formed outcome,
getting the context right is very important. What setting the context
means is that you drill down and focus on exactly when, where, and with
whom you want this goal.
✓ Look for secondary gain: In NLP, a secondary gain relates to a behavior
that appears to be negative or cause problems, but which in fact serves a
positive function at some level. An example is a smoker who knows that
smoking is harmful to her health, yet appreciates the secondary gain of
the peace and quiet of sitting outside for a cigarette and feeling calm and
solitary. When you identify secondary gain, you can remove blocks to
your success.

So, find yourself some quiet time, away from your nearest and dearest and the telephone,
invite your unconscious mind to the party, and get cracking at designing at designing the next
phase of your wonderful life. If you’re going, “Gee, where am I going to find the time?, just ask
yourself what the secondary gain is for you in avoiding doing this exercise.

When you’re hesitating over a decision and want to further check on your SMART goal or well-
formed outcome, ask yourself:
1. What will happen if I do this?
2. What will happen if I don’t do this?
3. What won’t happen if I do this?
4. What won’t happen if I don’t do this?

It can be valuable to think about who needs your service most and what would happen if you
don’t reach them, and they never get that help.

The Five Pillars of Goal Achievement
1. Make your Goal Inspiring. Build up the Why behind your goal. Really find your passion.
2. Reverse engineer your goal – look at it realistically. What steps are necessary before you
can achieve this goal? What learning and resources need to go into place? What
experience or accomplishments will lead toward this goal?
3. Decide. Decide to do it. Invest time, money, energy in a legally binding fashion that turn
this from a dream into an invested decision. This installs the goal into your unconscious
mind, creating an awareness in your day-to-day life that allows you to see and embrace
opportunities and resources.
4. Schedule it into your life. Respect your goal - and yourself - enough to make it part of
your daily and weekly schedule. Create habits that build toward the goal. Edit your work
your morning, your marketing and client processes to build in the goal’s needs.
5. Accountability. Find a mentor, coach or accountability partner to keep you on track.
