Podpułkownik Patryk Gorecki was not in a good mood. While his tank battalion was able to quickly cross the
Trave River north of Lübeck, little else had gone right. His recce and motorized rifle support were nowhere to be
found, and the sky was clear, with no sign of his promised Mi-24 support. At the crossing his supporting Shilkas
were able to drive off two West German helicopters, but the anti-aircraft vehicles were now out of contact.
Following his orders, he rapidly moved his battalion of 31 T-72Ms forward to secure Bundesstraße 432 and cut
off the NATO forces that clung to the inner-German border. As he ordered his unit forward some of his lead
tanks suddenly came under missile fire from a small copse of woods to his unit’s front.
Gorecki keyed his microphone and ordered his tanks to quickly engage the barely visible NATO infantry. In
unison most of the T-72Ms' 125mm guns barked to life and poured HE rounds into the dense German woods.
The fire of the Polish tanks was effective and soon the woods fell silent, with Gorecki ordering the formation
forward to find the road which was their objective.
Just as his lead elements informed him that they found the objective, a troop of enemy tanks made their
presence known. Three Danish Leopard 1 tanks, moving in the open from the north opened fire on the lead
Polish tanks. The older Leopard 1 tanks were no match for his T-72Ms, and within minutes the three Danish
tanks were furiously burning with their surviving crewmen fleeing to the rear.
Gorecki knew for the Danes to be this far south meant the road ahead would be even tougher than what he
thought when he received his orders. After a brief pause, Gorecki was back on his command net, they were
going to advance to the northwest.

The turret of the T-72M was quiet as Starszy Sierżant Dymkowski peered out of the commander's view port
looking for another target. The NATO counterattack caught the advancing Polish tanks by surprise, but now
they were reacting and firing their 125mm guns as fast as the gunners could see an enemy tank. It seemed to
Dymkowski that while many of the shots were doing damage, an equal number bounced off the tough exterior
of the Leopard 2 tanks they were engaging. The Polish tankers needed to use their numbers to overcome the
rate of fire of the Dutch tanks.
The T-72M nearest to Dymkowski’s tank suddenly exploded in a fire ball and the Sierżant yelled at his crew to
target the Leopard tank that just fired. The gunner quickly found his target and sent a 125mm round down-
range. The round extracted some measure of revenge as the enemy tank started to burn.
As suddenly as the enemy fire had started, the field fell quiet again. In the quiet pause, Dymkowski breathed a
huge sigh of relief.

Kapitan Cholewczynski could barely see the road ahead of his T-55AM2 as it moved westbound on Bundesstraße
206. After three days of tough fighting his unit was whittled down to five tanks. However, their main objective,
the Elbe River, was only 40 kilometresm away.
The dark woods that straddled the road ahead suddenly burst to life. Enemy tanks were springing an ambush.
“Fall in behind me” Cholewczynski shouted over the command net and soon the tank company was off the road.
Already a seasoned tank commander, he knew he had to find the flank of the enemy where his 100mm gun had
a fair chance against what he took to be Leopard 2 tanks in the woods.
Using the trees beside the road they raced ahead. When they finally broke concealment his gunner Piotr clearly
saw the shape of a Leopard 2 with its turret turning towards the Polish company. The Piotr got his shot off first
and the enemy tank rocked back, before the turret hatches flew open and the crew scrambled out to take cover.
However, more enemy tanks could now be seen in the trees.
The rest of Cholewczynski's unit soon joined in the fray, with many shots bouncing off the Leopard 2s' tough
exterior. However, enough shots were finding their mark. With the Leopards either destroyed or pulling back,
it was time to move again.
The Elbe awaited.

Sierżant Wiśniewski was in action and at the front of his squad from the 49th Warzawski Mechanised Infantry
Regiment as soon as the first enemy shot blew-up the BWP-1 next to him. On foot Wiśniewski lead his eight
men off the road and proceeded to the woods directly to their north. His squad had hardly moved 100 meters
when small arms fire whizzed around him.
“Take cover” Wiśniewski shouted, “Machine-gunners, lay down covering fire” he further instructed.
With that order Wiśniewski’s RPK gunners opened fire on the edge of the woods, while he lead a four-man fire
team towards the woods. They soon became pinned down, and Wiśniewski considered moving his small team
further ahead of the rest of his company. Right now he was in a relatively safe position in a small dip in the
ground that shielded his squad from danger.
As he took stock of the situation he looked into the eyes of his youngest soldier, Szeregowy Duda, who looked
terrified. Wiśniewski put his hand on Duda’s head and said “Don’t worry, it will be okay”.
The enemy fire began to ease, Wiśniewski seized the opportunity and stood up quickly and shouted “Forward,
on me” and with that command, his squad moved forward, heading for the woods.
