2.0 NAME OF EXPERIMENT: Angle measurement using Sine Bar & Slip
Gauges
3.0 OBJECTIVE:
i) To measure taper angle (unknown) of a given work piece by sine bar.
ii) To set the sine bar at a given angle.
4.0 PRINCIPLE:
The sine principle uses the ratio of the length of two sides of a right
triangle in deriving a given angle. It may be noted that devices operating
on sine principal are capable of self generation. The measurement is
usually limited to 45 degree from loss of accuracy point of view. The
accuracy with which the sine principle can be put to use is dependent in
practice, on some from linear measurement. The sine bar itself is not
complete measuring instrument. Another datum such as surface plate is
needed, as well as other auxiliary instrument, notably slip gauge, and
indicating device to make measurements.
Measuring known angles or locating any work to a given angle.
For this purpose, the surface plate is assumed to be having a perfectly flat
surface, so that its surface could be treated as horizontal. One of the
cylinders or rollers of sine bar is placed on the surface plate and other
roller is placed on the slip gauges of height h. Let the sine bar be set at an
angle . Then sin = h/l, where l is the distance between the center of
the rollers. Thus knowing & l, h can be found out and any work could
be set at this angle as the top face of sine bar is inclined at angle to the
surface plate. The use of angle plates and clamps

6.2 Set the work piece to measure the taper angle using sine bar and
dial gauge.
6.3 Transverse the dial gauge plunger over the ramp of work piece.
6.4 Note down the initial reading, final reading and the length of the
traverse.
6.5 Alternately, try to king the inclined surface of the work piece, whose
taper angle is to be measure, to the horizontal plane by placing
suitable combination of slip gauge under the lower end of the work
piece.
6.6 Note down the length of the slip gauge.
6.7 Calculate the taper angle through the formula given

6.8 Take note of the given angle for which the top surface of the sine
bar is to be set.
6.9 Theoretically calculate the height of the slip gauge required to lift
one end of sine bar such that top surface of the sine bar make the
required slope.
6.10 Insert the selected combination of slip gauge under one end of the
sine bar.

6.11 Use dial gauge with stand and traverse the plunger of the dial
gauge over a know length and check the slope of the sine bar.
6.12 All readings, calculation, drawing etc. should be done on a loose sheet.
On completion of the Job/Experiment present it to the sessional in –
charge for his signature and performance gradation. Grading shall be as
per University rules.
7.0 PRECAUTION:
7.1 Clean the measuring faces with paper or cloth. Keep the instrument in
the box properly.
7.2 Gripped the instrument to the measuring face exactly
7.3 Use sine bar when angle is less than 45 degree & more than 15 degree to
get high accuracy
7.4 Use angle plate to avoid any kind of error due to leaning of the system.
7.5 Use surface plate
7.6 All the precautions of using gauge blocks are to be taken.
8.0 DISPOSAL: N.A.

ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS:
1. What will be the minimum slip gauge combination without using wear
blocks in each of the following cases of total height?
A) 2.5699 inch B) 3.0987 inch
From the set given
2. What will be the gauge block build up for the given angle 30 050’12’’ in
a sine bar of length 5 inch? You must consider the two wear blocks
(top & bottom) of each 0.100 inch in the gauge block build up. Use the
above mentioned gauge block set.
3. What precautions are taken to use gauge blocks?
