MA2301 Problem set 1 (Laplace transform)

These problems are intended to provide a basic understanding about Laplace transform, its prop-
erties, and applications.

[1] Determine each function is of exponential order.

(a) f (t) = sinh t (b) f (t) = sinh(t2 ) (c) f (t) = t2016

2
 if 0 < t < 4
[2] (a) Let f (t) = −2 if 4 < t < 8

1 if 8 < t.

Express f as a single expression (using Heaviside function).

(b) Sketch a labeled graph for each function.

(i) H(t − 1)et−1 (ii) t[H(t − 1) − H(t − 2) + H(t − 3)]

[3] Determine the Laplace transform exists for each function.

3 2
(a) f (t) = t− 2 (b) f (t) = t− 3

[4] Find the Laplace transform (using the definition) for each function.

(a) f (t) = H(t) cos at (b) f (t) = sinh at (c) f (t) = tn , n ∈ N (d) f (t) = δ(t − 2)

[5] Find L[f 0 ] (using the definition) if f and f 0 are piecewise continuous and f is of exponential order.

[6] Find the inverse Laplace transform of each function. (Use convolution or shifting theorems as
needed.)

1 1 1 1 1 s+1
(a) s(s+3)
(b) s2 +s
(c) s2 −s
(d) s2 +3s+3
(e) s2 −9
(f) s2 −s

[7] Find the general solution of each differential equation using Laplace transform method.

(a) y 0 + 2y = 4t2 (b) y 000 + 3y 00 + 3y 0 + y = e2t

[8] Solve each initial value problem using Laplace transform method.

(a) y 00 − 4y 0 − 5y = 2 + e−t , y 0 (0) = y(0) = 0. (b) 3y 0 + y = 6e2t , y(0) = 0.

[9] Solve the initial value problem using Laplace transform.

0
 if 0 < t < 5
0 00
y(0) = y (0) = 0, y + 4y = t − 5 if 5 < t < 10

1 if 10 < t.

x00 (t) = y + sin t, x(0) = 1, x0 (0) = 0

y 00 (t) = −x0 (t) + sin t, y(0) = −1, y 0 (0) = −1
