Arriesgado - Lab Exercise No. 2 Linked List

This document provides instructions for completing a linked list program in C++. It includes: 1) Objectives of understanding and implementing linked lists using functions like create_node, insert_begin, insert_last, insert_pos, delete_pos, sort, search, update, reverse, and display. 2) Background information on linked lists including node structure, pointer declarations, creating an empty linked list, displaying nodes, searching, counting, and inserting nodes. 3) An incomplete program to implement the linked list with functions marked to be completed like create_node, insert_last, and sort. The document provides guidance on filling in the missing code.

EXERCISE

2
LINKED LIST

W01
05/10/2019
I. OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the experiment students must be able to:

Cognitive
a.) understand the execute technique of linked list.
.
Psychomotor:
a.) construct a program using linked list.
b.) compile and debug the error of the program

Affective
a.) appreciate the concept behind this experiment

II. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

A Linked list is a linear collection of specially designed data elements, called nodes linked to
one another by means of pointer. Each node is divided into two parts: the first part contains
the information of the element, and the second part contains the address of the next node in
the linked list. Address part of the node is also called linked or next field.

Figure 1.0 Node.

Figure 1.1 Linked List.

The linear linked list can be represented in memory with the following declaration.

struct Node
{
int DATA; //Instead of ‘DATA’ we also use ‘Info’
struct Node *Next; //Instead of ‘Next’ we also use ‘Link’
};
typedef struct Node *NODE;

Declaration of a linked list

#include <iostream.h>

typedef struct listtag

{
char name[30];
struct listtag *next;
} listentry, *listptr;
listptr first, last, entry;

main()
{

Creating a linked list

When a linked list is created, it is empty and thus contains no nodes. However, the three
external pointers and the length must all be initialized. Each of the pointers is set to null.

If (node==0)
{
first = entry;
last = entry;
last ->next=null;
}
else
{
last -> next = entry;
last = entry;
last -> next =null;
}

node++;

Displaying the nodes

Two ways of displaying the value of a node:

 displaying all records
 displaying a specific record
Displaying all records

entry = first;
while (entry != null)
{
cout <<”record : “ << entry-> name;
entry = entry-> next;
}

Displaying a specific record

entry = first;
tmpnode = 1;
while (sperec != tmpnode)
{
entry = entry ->next;
tmpnode++;
}
cout <<”Record : “ << entry ->name;

Looking up or searching for a node

Two ways of looking up for a node

 finding the nth item

 finding the matching item

finding the nth item:

entry = first;
tmpnode = 1;
while (nthitem != tmpnode)
{
entry = entry ->next;
tmpnode++;

}
cou << “got it”;

finding a matching item:

entry = first;
while(entry->data != newdata)
{
entry = entry->next;
}
cout << “got it”;

Counting the nodes

If (node == 0)
{
first = entry;
last = entry;
last -> next = null;
}

else
{
last -> next = entry;
last = entry;
last -> next = null;
}
node++;

entry = first;
nodecount = 1;
while(entry != null)
{
entry = entry -> next;
nodecount ++;
}
cout <<”Total number of nodes : “ <<nodecount;

Inserting a node

Three ways of inserting a node

 insertion at the beginning of the linked list

 insertion after the nth record of the linked list
 insertion at the end of the linked list

Insertion after the nth record

int x, insert;
listptr tempinsert;

tempinsert = (listptr) malloc (sizeof(listentry));

while (x <= insert-1)
{
entry = entry ->next;
x++;
}
tempinsert ->next = entry ->next;
entry -> next = tempinsert;

Free (address)

The function free is used in order to delete the record totally both in the list and in the
computer memory.

int x, tempdelete;
listptr doomed;

entry = first;
x = 1;
while (x <= tempdelete- 1)
{
entry = entry -> next;
x++;
}
doomed = entry -> next;
entry -> next = doomed ->next;
free (doomed);

Editing a node

entry = first;
tmpnode = 1;
while (nthitem != tmpnode)
{
entry = entry -> next;
tmpnode++;
}
entry -> data = newdata;
