Accomplishment Report in Reading Program Sy-2018-2019

Calios Elementary School implemented the Marungko Approach to teaching reading, which focuses on teaching the sounds of letters before their names. The school used reading corners, group reading activities, and having more advanced readers assist struggling readers. An assessment found that non-readers existed in every grade, so the school prioritized helping frustration-level students and used the Marungko Approach. The program aimed to familiarize students with reading before entering the K-12 curriculum and help those struggling to cope with lessons. Overall, the school sought to take a holistic approach to teaching basic education through initiatives like the Marungko reading program.

MARUNGKO APPROACH: Method of Teaching Reading

INTRODUCTION:

One of the activities of a teacher is to teach a child to read. Everyone

knows that the child should be prepared before he or she can become
accustomed to reading. Its readiness is measured by checklists and other
educational equipment.

When all of these steps have been made by the teacher, he or she will
be able to read the child so that he or she will begin exploring the student's
ability in this field.

Here is a good use of basic reading, the Marungko Approach. The

Marungko Approach was introduced by Nooraihan Ali, wife of the Malaysian
Minister to two teachers of Marungko, Bulacan. In this approach, the child first
learns the sounds of each letter of the Filipino alphabet or the so-called Mastery
of Sounds of Letters in English.

It uses phono-syllabic technique or repetition of the sound of each letter

to combine it and build its sound. Here, make sure the sound of the letter is the
first one to teach the teacher not the letter's name. Using this approach, the
child can easily understand each letter and learn more about reading
especially in home or Mother Tongue.

Generally, Individual Reading Record helps monitor the learners reading

capacity and from that, concrete data base PHILl- IRI validation of pretest were
produced to make comparison to what levels of reading the school had
obtained. It shows that non-readers still exist in every grade level. This calls for a
more intensive intervention from the part of the reading teachers as to how
he/she implement activities that will greatly help the stakeholders.

Lastly, teachers were encouraged to religiously do the task of the School

Reading Program adapted by the school not only Phil-IRI assessment tool but
look for a reading methods that would fit in to their learners level of
comprehension. And from that point onward positive results will be manifested in
the Individual Reading Record of every students of Calios Elementary School.

Marungko Program at school at
familiarize it with the help of their
parents at home. The program can
also cater the pupils before the
enter the K-12 curriculum.

The school implemented the program with the help of CES teaching and non-teching
staffs. They cultivate the hollistic approach in teaching basic education as well as
helping the “frustration” students to cope up with the lesson by helping them read.
Grade 6 students who wants to
undergo the reading program
can also be a part of it but the
priority of the school are those
who falls for the frustration level
so the teacher teaches first those
who struggles in reading
Since the program cannot be done during class hours and the teacher doesn’t
have much time to make every non-reader a reader. The CES teaching staffs
can conduct group reading. The pupils who can read initiates to teach those
who can not which shows good behavior to others.
