Here is a step-by-step guide to your first Mendeley for education:

Step 1: Sign up at https://www.mendeley.com/ for free and click on “Download” to download the
Mendeley Desktop.

• For Google Chrome users, you can install browser plugin by clicking on “Install Chrome
browser extension”. After installation, the Chrome extension button will appear to the
right of your address bar.
• For other browser users, you can use 'bookmarklet' importer, which is added to the
Favourites or Bookmarks menu.

Install MS Word Plugin

Use “Tools” > “Install MS Word Plugin” to Install the Citation Plugin.

Word processor will be closed during installing the plugin so ensure your document has been
saved before attempting

Step 2: Adding your existing PDFs to Mendeley:

Add your existing papers to Mendeley by dragging and dropping a PDF into the Mendeley
Desktop window. A folder containing multiple papers can be also dragged and dropped.
Alternatively, you can add PDFs to Mendeley by clicking on the Add Document button on the left
of the toolbar. Mendeley will automatically detect the contents of PDFs, creating library entries for
the PDFs.

Manual creation for the PDFs is also allowed by clicking on “File” > “Add Entry Manually…” to
manually input the details of a reference. It is highly recommended that you can review its details
for accuracy after you add a new reference to your library.

Mendeley allows you to save online content to your Mendeley Library and it will be very smart to
scan your current browser window and detect the content and make it to be your reference.

 Press the Chrome extension button to the right of the address bar and then enter the information
of this document if it is necessary. After reloading by clicking on “Sync”, the information of this
article or document will appear in your Library.

to its listing in Mendeley Desktop, to open Mendeley's PDF Reader.

 Important Notes/ FAQ

Q1: Is this free software?

A: Upon registration, Mendeley provides the user with 2 GB of free web storage space, which is
upgradeable at a cost.

Q2: I am using MS Office Word 2016. I don’t know which version of MS Word Plugin I should use.
A: You don’t need to select the version of MS Word Plugin. Mendeley will detect which word
processor(s) you have installed, so the options available to you may vary.

Q3: I cannot find “Insert Citation” bottom after I install MS Word Plugin. Where is that?
A: The tool will appear in a different location depending on the software you’re using. In Libre
Office it will appear as a toolbar across the top of the screen. In Microsoft Word for Mac, the tool
will appear as a separate panel which can be positioned wherever you like. In Microsoft Word for
Windows, the tool can be accessed via the References tab on the Ribbon.

Q4: I remove the toolbar by accident. What should I do?

A: If you cannot see the toolbar, or if you remove it by accident, you can restore it via the ‘View’

Educational/Research Significance 立即移除

The main reason to invest time in Mendeley (or other citation management tools) is because it
facilitates the teaching/learning/research practitioners a lot. Publishing articles is a very important
component to the research-related work/job, so frequently they are busy collecting, organizing,
and entering many bibliographic references into manuscripts. Therefore, a useful and efficient
paper/citation management software is of great importance to them.

However, Mendeley’s slogan is to “organize, share and discover research papers” which illustrates
the major difference between new tools like Mendeley and Zotero that were designed to manage
papers versus older-generation products like EndNote and RefWorks which were developed to
manage citations. Mendeley is free and has both a desktop program and a web-based account
that work in tandem. That ensures the users’ personal research data stable and safe (Butros,
Taylor, Librarian, & Library, n.d.).

Besides, Mendeley has a number of features to assist users not only with organizing papers but
also with the reading process. Articles can be organized into Collections (similar to folders) and
identified further using Tags (keywords). Articles can be filtered using tags, authors or
publications, and it is possible to search across PDFs making it easier to track an idea. Individual
articles can be marked as read or unread, and as favourites, and the writing tools can be used to
highlight text within a PDF or to add notes. In this sense, Mendeley can be seen as an effective
tool to simplify the routine aspects of daily research and teaching/learning.
