Battery Disconnect Switch Control Unit, Component Description
The document describes the battery disconnect switch control unit (BESO) used in various Mercedes-Benz truck models. The BESO control unit evaluates the positions of the emergency off switch and frame emergency off switch. If either switch is pressed, the BESO disconnects the onboard electrical system from the battery by actuating an integrated bistable relay. It also sends messages over the CAN bus to notify other control units like the engine management system to shut down. The location of the BESO control unit depends on whether the vehicle has a standard or integral rear end.

A33 Battery disconnect switch control unit (BESO)
W54.21-1431-03
In vehicles with standard rear end, the battery disconnect switch
(BESO) control unit (A33) is installed below the vehicle battery in the direction of travel in front of the compressed air reservoirs of the brake system.
Vehicles with code C7T (Integral rear end)
A33 Battery disconnect switch control unit
(BESO)
W54.21-1430-04
In vehicles with integral rear end, the battery disconnect switch
(BESO) control unit (A33) is installed on the inside of the left longitudinal frame member above the rear axle.
Tasks Bistable relay for disconnecting the on-board electrical system
Evaluating the positions of the EMERGENCY OFF switch (S30) from the battery and the frame EMERGENCY OFF frame (S31) Function Disconnecting the on-board electrical system from the battery, The battery disconnect switch (BESO) control unit (A33) evaluates the when the EMERGENCY OFF switch (S30) or the frame positions of the EMERGENCY OFF switch (S30) and the frame EMERGENCY OFF switch (S31) is pressed EMERGENCY OFF switch (S31) via the input signal. If the Body EMERGENCY OFF switch (S30) or the frame EMERGENCY OFF Control electronics switch (S31) is pressed, the battery disconnect switch (BESO) control unit (A33) disconnects the on-board electrical system from the battery. Even before the on-board electrical system is disconnected from the battery, it sends a message to the exterior CAN (CAN 1) for further processing, announcing that the on-board electrical system will be disconnected from the battery. Among other things, the engine management (MCM) control unit (A4) initiates the switching-off of the engine due to this message. The on-board electrical system is disconnected by a bistable relay integrated into the battery disconnect switch (BESO) control unit (A33). The bistable relay is actuated 800 ms after the battery disconnect switch (BESO) control unit (A33) has recognized that the EMERGENCY OFF switch (S30) or the frame EMERGENCY OFF switch (S31) was pressed. The tachograph (TCO) (P1) continues to be supplied with voltage by the battery disconnect switch (BESO) control unit (A33) via a separate pin. As a redundant message on the exterior CAN (CAN 1), the battery disconnect switch (BESO) control unit (A33) also transmits a pulse width modulated signal via a direct line to the cab sensor and actuator module (SCA) control unit (A7). If the battery disconnect switch (BESO) control unit (A33) detects that the EMERGENCY OFF switch (S30) or frame EMERGENCY OFF switch (S31) has been pressed, it changes the duty cycle of the pulse width modulated signal from 50 % to 75 %, whereupon the cab sensor and actuator module (SCA) control unit (A7) detects that disconnection of the on-board electrical system is being initiated.
