Infectious diseases expert in favor of
lifting of Dengvaxia ban
MANILA -- A doctor on Sunday said he was in favor of lifting government's
ban on controversial vaccine Dengvaxia following the increasing number of
dengue cases in several regions.
Dr. Rontgene Solante, head of adult infectious diseases and tropical medicine at
the San Lazaro Hospital, said it was better to have Dengvaxia than no vaccine
against dengue at all.
"If you're asking me I am for the lifting of the Dengvaxia and it will be made
available, yes," he told ANC's Dateline Philippines.
"If you are given a vaccine that would reduce hospitalization, a vaccine that is
effective against severe disease or effective against symptomatic dengue, why
would you not accept that?"
He added: "If everything will be really done correctly and there is a
recommendation that this vaccine is safe and effective then I would say this will
be more beneficial to any country reporting a higher number of dengue
infections."
The government earlier expressed openness to making Dengvaxia available
again in the market following a spike in dengue cases in the country

weather, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said.

Justice chief says to look into P367-
million near-expiry medicines
MANILA - Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Sunday said his department
will look into the P367.158 million worth of drugs nearing expiration at the
Department of Health.
Guevarra made the remark as he said he has yet to receive any formal request of
inquiry, as earlier claimed by Bagong Bagong Henerasyon Party-list Rep.
Bernadette Dy.
"Now that she has mentioned it, I will secure a copy of the COA report and look
into any possible criminal aspect. If the matter goes beyond simple
administrative liability, then I will direct the NBI to do its own probe," he told
reporters.
The Department of Health earlier said it will investigate the non-distribution
medicines nearing expiration, after the Commission on Audit (COA) said it
failed to dispense P367.158 million worth of drugs.
Eighty percent of the medicine flagged by state auditors have been distributed to
communities where they are needed most, Health Undersecretary Eric Domingo

Death toll in Iloilo-Guimaras Strait
tragedy rises to 25
MANILA -- (2nd UPDATE) The number of fatalities in the capsizing of 3
boats in the Iloilo-Guimaras Strait has risen to 25, Sunday, according to the
Office of Civil Defense.
In its 3 p.m. press briefing, the agency said that out of 87 passengers, 25 were
confirmed dead, 9 remain missing, while 53 were rescued.
It earlier said there were 26 dead, 5 missing, and 55 survivors out of 86 total
passengers.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas earlier said 11 were confirmed dead in the
separate incidents Saturday.

Authorities on Sunday retrieved 10 bodies underneath M/B Jenny Vince, which
was found in Naluoyan Port in Dumangas town, Iloilo past 6 a.m. Another body
was found adrift in the sea near the said town.
Of the 11 bodies retrieved, 5 of the victims were still wearing life jackets. They
were found to have contusions on their head and different parts of the body.
Three were male, including a child, and 8 were female.
M/B Jenny Vince was the third boat that capsized Saturday, following M/B Chi
Chi and M/B Keshia 2 due to gusty winds and strong waves.
According to a report of the Office of the Civil Defense, the boat was carrying
37 passengers, including 4 crew members.
The Philippine Coast Guard has yet to issue an official statement.
All trips between Iloilo City and Guimaras have been suspended, leaving some
700 passengers stranded at Parola Wharf in the city.
Pinoy arrested in Hong Kong for
alleged protest participation
MANILA -- (UPDATE) A Filipino has been arrested in Hong Kong for
allegedly participating in protests for democratic reforms.
Germinia Aguilar-Usudan, deputy Philippine consul general in Hong Kong, said
the Filipino has requested not to be identified because "he’s quite worried about
the health of his mother."
The Filipino, who was arrested at 11 p.m. Saturday in Mong Kok for wearing a
black shirt, is being assisted by two pro-bono Hong Kong lawyers, Usudan said.
"He said he was on his way to get some food last night and unfortunately he was
wearing black and he’s not part of the rally," Usudan told ANC's Dateline
Philippines.
The diplomat said no charges have been filed yet against the Filipino and they
are waiting for the outcome of police investigation, which may be released
Sunday afternoon.
The Filipino's arrest was the first since protests began in the Chinese special
administrative region, Usudan said.

"This is the first time we experienced an arrest of a Filipino allegedly involved
in a rally. We will continue to advise our citizens to avoid this area and
preferably to avoid using black or white t-shirts," she said.
Eman Villanueva, secretary-general of Bayan Muna Hong Kong, said the arrest
was a case of mistaken identity.
"He was just passing by Mong Kok on his way home when the police charged
and ran after some of the protesters. It just so happened he was on the same road
so he got arrested," he told ANC.
Thousands of black-clad protesters marched Saturday in Hong kong's Mong
Kok shopping district, setting up barricades and blocked roads, forcing stores to
close.
More protests are planned Sunday and activists are calling for a city-wide strike
on Monday.
Villanueva, meanwhile, shut down rumors that the Hong Kong government is
planning to declare martial law.
"There are images or memes going around social media. I just want to say these
are rumors and unverified reports, there is no basis to claims. Consulted locals,
they say there is no such thing," he said.

Naging ganap na bagyo nitong Sabado ng gabi ang low pressure area na
