Midterm Exam Steel Design

The document contains a midterm exam for a structural engineering course. It includes 3 problems: 1) calculating the maximum moment for an I-beam with given dimensions and span, 2) checking the adequacy of an I-beam against shear force for a given span and load, and 3) determining the eccentricity of a load given various parameters. Reference properties are also provided for a W10X60 section.

MIDTERM EXAM: Flexural Members and Combined Axial and Bending

NAME :
DATE :

PROBLEM SOLVING
1.) A simply supported beam has an I-section made from A36 steel. Flanges are 450 mm by 20 mm
and the web is 500 mm by 20 mm. Calculate the maximum moment that the beam can carry if the
span is 6 meters.

2.) An eccentric load of 230KN is placed at the certain distance of 180mm from the x-axis and at a
distance “e” from the y-axis. Determine “e” given Fy= 345MPa, k=1.0, Fb= 0.6Fy, L= 4.5m.

W10X60 Properties: A = 11 400 mm2 Sy = 378 x 103 mm3

d = 260 mm rx = 111.8 mm
Sx = 1 100 x 103 mm3 ry = 65.1 mm

3.) A simply supported beam has an I – Section made from 3 A36 steel plates welded together. Flanges
are 450 x 20mm and web is 500 x 20mm. Check the adequacy of the beam against shear when L = 4
m, and w = 430 kN/m.
