Construction management-IX Assignment-05

The document discusses different types of charts used in construction project management including bar charts, Gantt charts, and milestone charts. It provides examples of vertical and horizontal bar charts to compare data categories over time. Gantt charts show project tasks and timelines visually with activities on the y-axis and scheduled time on the x-axis. Milestone charts focus on significant planned events at specific times using symbols to show planned and actual completion dates. An example milestone chart is provided. The document also includes a sample construction project timeline asking to prepare a bar chart showing the expected progress by November 10th over 5 working days per week and calculating the total time and completion date.

Assignment-05

Section A

Q1) What do you understand by bar chart and milestone chart? Explain with examples.

A1) A bar graph is a visual tool that uses bars to compare data among categories. A bar graph
may run horizontally or vertically. The important thing to know is that the longer the bar, the
greater its value.
Bar graphs consist of two axes. On a vertical bar graph, the horizontal axis (or x-axis) shows
the data categories. Bar graphs have three key attributes:
 A bar diagram makes it easy to compare sets of data between different groups at a
glance.
 The graph represents categories on one axis and a discrete value in the other. The goal
is to show the relationship between the two axes.
 Bar charts can also show big changes in data over time

Types of a Bar Graph

When presenting data visually, there are several different styles of bar graphs to consider.

Vertical Bar Graph

The most common type of bar graph is the vertical bar graph. It is very useful when
presenting a series of data over time. The vertical bar chart below shows a series of quarterly
data, categorized by year. The reader can easily see not only the trends of sales over the four-
year period, but also how the sales compare during each quarter.

One disadvantage of vertical bar graphs is that they don't leave much room at the bottom of
the chart if long labels are required.
Horizontal Bar Graph
Converting the vertical data to a horizontal bar chart solves this problem. There is plenty of
room for the long label along the vertical axis, as shown below.

Stacked Bar Graph

The stacked bar graph is a visual that can convey a lot of information. Look at the stacked bar
graph below, and you can see that there are eight data series (world regions) within each
category (year).

GANTT CHART

A Gantt chart is a useful graphical tool which shows activities or tasks performed against
time. It is also known as visual presentation of a project where the activities are broken down
and displayed on a chart which makes it is easy to understand and interpret. A Gantt chart is a
popular tool in project management. It basically drills down activities which need to be done
by a fixed time period. It is commonly used for tracking project schedules.

On the chart, tasks are shown on the vertical axis while the scheduled time-spend is laid out
on the horizontal axis. Each task is represented by a bar that shows the time required for the
project. The bar then represents or shows percentage of tasks that have been completed. It
also shows dependencies, which simply means the inter linkages between various activities in
the project.

For EXAMPLE:

In this on the x axis the activities are written and on the y axis completion date is written. So
it is depicted that the sequence that is inherited after completion of activities with respect to
the duration of time.

MILESTONE CHART
A Milestone Chart focuses on planned significant events scheduled to occur at specific times
in the program. Such events could be the initiation or completion of a particularly important
or critical activity, equipment deliveries, reviews, or approval dates. Like the Gantt chart, the
milestone chart uses symbols imposed on a calendar to provide information about planned
and actual completion dates and any revisions to the milestone schedule. There is no standard
set of symbols for milestone charts. The Figure below shows examples of the symbols
prescribed for reporting milestone information.

Another example of milestones would be the usage

of time or resources. This refers to the specific
number of hours or materials allotted to a project.
For example, if a project is expected to take 10
hours and cost $10,000 to finish, completing five
hours of work and spending $5,000 may be
considered a milestone.

Q2) A typical small house construction project

consists of following operations along with time
set for its completion. The project commences on
Wednesday 14th Oct 2015. Assuming the
assumption made also determine total time and date of completion of project.
Expected progress by 10th Nov. keeping 5 working days in a week, prepare bar chart of the
project.

TOTAL TIME : 64 days and DATE: 17DEC
