General Prior to packaging individual items of equipment, (motors, gear boxes, pumps etc) shall be prepared for storage in accordance with applicable manufacturers recommendations. Preservation and Protection ttoms subject to long term storage shall be preserved and protected in accordance with 40-031. Exposed Machined Surfaces ‘All externa! machined surfaces which are exposed to corrosion shall be coated with a de-watering type protection fuid (Tecty! 472 or equivalent, followed by the application of a long term external protective Compound (tectyi 506 or equivalent) Flange openings ‘Al machined flanges and facings around openings shall be treated as in para 3.2 Openings shall be closed with elther full face timber covers (hardboard or similar materials are not permitted) or full face rubber insertion gaskets, with 3mm thick steel biank flanges, secured by a rrinimum of 4 full diameter bots, Metal blank flanges shall be treated as in para 32. Where possible all covers are to be sealed using @ ‘weatherproof adhesive tape (Densotape) as an added protection against ingress of moisture. ‘Threaded Connections [All male and female threaded connections shall be treated with a de-watering type protection fuid and then fitted with plastic caps or plugs. Large diameter pipes shall be protected by using metal caps, (protected as in para 3.2) with edges sealed using a weatherproof adhesive tape. Instrumentation and Control Panels Any instruments that are liable to damage during transit if left in their operational position shall be removed, labelled and individually packed, together with the required amount of desiccant and securely fastened within the skid structure Gauges and switches which have glass or acrylic faces shall be protected by plywood blanks securely taped in postion. All panel surfaces shall be cushioned to prevent damage and where necessary supported by adsitional temporary bracing, Bracing Equipment which contains unsupported components will have temporary blocking and bracing appliod to ensure safety in transit Crating For skid mounted units the sides of fished crate construction will be within the skid side iting brackets. The underside of the skid shall be protected by bolting timbers along the full ength of the skid underside. The crate shall be constructed in line with client specifications where applicable, ‘SULZER (UK) PUMPS SULZER PUMPS A QUALITY SPECIFICATION 40-930 Page 3of 3 Rev 2 Date 25.03.05, 52 Items of equipment not located on fabricated skid structures shall, for transit purposes, be secured to 2 wood base. 53 Prior to sealing a suitable quantity of desiccant, calculated as indicated in BS1133 Section 19 1968, shall be distributed evenly throughout the package. BA All machinery, electrical equipment or items for long term storage shall be sealed in a vacuum extracted, 1000g polythene envelope or metal foil laminate bag. 55 Following fting of the polythene sheeting an open crate will be constructed around the unit. Where control panels, or instrument racks are immediately adjacent to the edge, full plywood sheeting will be secured to the crate side immediately in from of such items. 56 Export standard cases shall be constructed in accordance with BS 1133 Section 19. Cases shall have 22mm P.T.G. cladding with a sandwich type lid using a laminated bituminous waterproof liner. 57 ‘The crate construction shal be suitable for mechanical handling by forklifts or slinging. 6. Cleaning 34 Prior to the application of any protection and before packaging all components shall be cleaned to ensure removal of sand, scale, weld splatter, oi, grease, or any other foreign matter. 4 Protection of Internals 44 Pumps constructed entirely of stainless steel and or non-ferrous alloys, do not required any preservation or protection of intemal surfaces. 42 Pumps constructed partialy or wholly of cast iron, carbon steel, or low alloy steels, shall have their internal surfaces protected by one of the following methods, 424 Multi-Stage Barrel Pumps Drain the pump as soon after testing as possible, leaving all drain connections open. ‘Thoroughly flush the pump casing through both suction and delivery branches using towns mains water to remove any debris and flush out test bed water. The pump should be turned during this operation. ‘Allow to drain for 30 minutes, turning the shaft once or twice in this period. Close the drain connections. Fill the pump completely with Aquavap through the suction nozzle and tur the shaft once or twice during filing. When full leave to stand for ten minutes then drain When the fiuid has stopped flowing, slowly turn the pump to expel as much remaining fluid as possible. Close the drain connection and blank off all openings using stee! blanking plates with rubber insertion gaskets. Bearing housings should be preserved with Shell Ensis Oil or Shell Ensis SAE 30 Oi. Represervation should be carried out every 12 months. 422 Other Pump Types. Drain pump as soon as possible after testing leaving all drain connections open, spray pump internals with Aquavap. Blank of all openings using ste! blanking plates with rubber insertion gaskets. 43 Bearings 43.4 General Internal surfaces of bearing housing shall be thoroughly cleaned and shell have their un-machined and non-close fitting surfaces coated with two coats of ai-drying Alkyd Resin Based Paint. Oil lubricated bearings shall be drained and re-filled with a protective oll (Ensis SAE 30). All surfaces ‘above the oil level, but normally in contact, shall be coated with the same protective oil. SULZER ROTEQ UK LTD SULZER PUMPS A QUALITY SPECIFICATION 40-931 Page S015 Rev 7 Date 07-05-97 Breather caps and any other openings in the bearing housing shall be sealed as detailed in 40-920, Rolling Element Bearings ‘The bearing housing shall be liberally flushed with an oxidation and corrosion inhibiting oll which is readily solubie in standard lubricating oils (e.g., Shell Ensis Oil N). ‘The shaft should be rotated a few times to ensure that the fluid is properly distributed. 433 Plain and 4 Lobed Journal Bearings ‘The bearing housing and bearing shell should be sprayed with preservation oil as in 4.3.1 after any strip inspection. ‘After replacement of the bearing shells exposed parts of the shaft should be given 2 further coating of oil, to prevent corrosion of the shaft by an accumulation of condensation. Plastic sheeting shall be placed round bearings to protect journals in transt 434 Tilting Pad Thrust Bearings ‘The thrust pads shall be removed from the bearing housing after test. ‘The bearing housing and pads shall be sprayed with preservation oll as 4.3.1 and re-assembled. 44 Electrical Enclosures (e.g., control panels, Junction boxes, Motor Terminal Boxes) Assuitable number of desiccant bags shall be introduced into all enclosures in accordance with BS 1133, ‘The enclosure should then be made airtight (e.g., by securely fastening any covers and by ensuring that any gland entries are blanked off). A label shall be affixed to each enclosure waring that desiccant bags are enclosed. 45 Shaft Seals it mechanical seals are fitted, the stuffing box and seal shall be cleaned with a cleaning agent. The lower drain shail be plugged and the stuffing box filed with lightweight grease. In pumps equipped with Packed glands, the gland packing used for tast shall be removed, the stuffing box dried and the glang packing used for test shall be removed, the stuffing box dried and the gland re-packed with fresh packing rings. 5. Lub Oil Systems Where a lub oil system is provided (and long term protection is required) the system may be drained and filed with oi, then run for 30 minutes to ensure that the whole lub system is properly preserved. The system should then be drained. Preservation 34 All external and internal surfaces, including close fiting parts, shall be preserved in accordance with 40-931 at Sulzer Works prior to storage. 4 Pre-Storage Inspection 44 Where pumps are to be stored outdoors uncrated the paint system should be checked for damage. ‘The preservation of exposed machined surfaces and condition of densotape seals should be checked visually prior to storage. All electrical enclosures should be checked to ensure that covers are securely fastened and gland entries are sealed. 42 {n the event of any disturbance of the sealing covers, examination of internal surfaces is required {followed by replacement of Vapour Corrosive inhibitor and re-sealing of openings. 5. Inspection 54 Pumps and associated equipment shall be regularly inspected during storage at intervals not exceeding 6 months to ensure that external protection is effective and seals are firmly in place. 52 Pumps fitted with ball and roller bearings must have the shaft rotated every 6 months ensuring that the shaft is stopped in a different position each time. 53 ‘At intervals not exceeding 12 months the blank shall be removed and internal surfaces of pumps shall be examined. Any surface showing signs of deterioration shall be re-furbished as necessary and further inspection shall be carried out. Ba During inspection exhausted Vapour Corrosive Inhibitor shall be replaced as necessary. 6.
