Exercise 1 – Bar chart

1) Create a bar chart showing Sales by Sub-category

2) Color the bars according to Profit.

3) Add sales labels to the bars and remove the horizontal axis

4) Group the four smallest Sub-categories as Small items

Direction Details

From the measures list drag Sales to columns.


From the dimensions list drag Sub-category to rows.
Sort the bars in descending order (from largest to smallest).
From the measures list drag Profit to color on the marks card.
From the measures list drag Sales to label on the marks card.
Right click the axis and de-select show header.
To group the small items together, hold Control and click the labels of the four
least purchased sub-categories. In the tool tip click the paper-clip to group them.
Right click the new label and edit the alias
Exercise 2 – Map

1) Create a filled map showing the Profit by Country

2) Profit should determine the color of the countries

3) Show a filter as “Single value (dropdown)” for Order date

Direction Details

From the dimensions list drag Country to detail on the marks card.
From the measures list Drag Profit to color on the marks card.
From the dimensions list drag Order date to the filter shelf. Choose “# Years”
select “all” and click ok.
Right click the field on the filter shelf and select show filter.
At the top right corner of the filter click the small triangle and select single value
(dropdown).
Exercise 3 – Scatter plot
1) Create a scatter plot with Sales on the x-axis and Profit on the y-axis.

2) Where each mark in the plot is a customer.

3) Add a trend line.

4) Change the Marks from Automatic to Circle and find a suitable colour and
transparency level

Direction Details
From the measures list Drag Sales to columns.
From the measures list drag Profit to rows.
From the dimensions list drag Customer name to detail on the marks card.
In the top of the data window click the analytics tab.
Drag a trend line into the view. Choose linear trend.
On the marks card, change the mark type from Automatic to Circle.
On the marks card, find a fitting color and try to play with the level of
transparency.
Exercise 4 – Customer list
Create a customer list showing:
- Customer name,
- what products they have purchased,
- the exact Order date,
- Profit and
- Sales amount

Direction Details

From the dimensions list drag Customer name to rows.


From the dimensions list drag Product name to rows - add all members.
Right click-drag Order date from the dimensions list to rows.
In the pop-up window choose MDY(Order date)
From the measures list drag Sales to text on the marks card
Double click on Profit to add it next to sales.
Exercise 5 – Timeline
1) Create a continuous timeline showing Sales over Order Date on a monthly
granularity.

2) Break down the timeline by Segment, creating 3 lines. Add trend lines

3) Edit the trend line to Hide Confidence Bands

Direction Details

From the measures list drag Sales to rows.


From the dimension list drag Order Date to columns.
Right click Order Date and select month. Note that there are two instances of
“month” when you right click. You want to click the bottom “month” on the list.
Doing so you show sales over a continuous axis. This shows a line from the first
month available in our dataset to last month in the dataset.
From the dimension list drag Segment to Color on the marks card.
Add a trend-line to the view, but right clicking next to a line and select Trend
lines -> Show trend lines
Edit the reference line by right clicking it, and remove the tick from “Show
confidence Band”
Exercise 6 – Calculated field: Datediff.
1) Create a new calculated field called Date Difference

2) The calculation of the field should show the number of days between Order
Date and Ship Date. (Search for DATEDIFF when writing the calculated field to
see examples of the syntax used)

3) Create a highlight table showing the Date Difference by Segment and Ship
Mode.

4) Change the colour to a sequential red, to express that more days = darker red.

Direction Details

Right click on a white area of your measuring list (on the left side of the screen)
and select Create calculated field.
Name your new calculation “Date Difference”
Add the formula DATEDIFF('day',[Order Date],[Ship Date])
From the dimensions list drag Ship Mode to columns
From the dimensions list drag Segment to rows
From the measures list drag Date Difference to Label on the marks card
From the measures list drag Date Difference to Color on the marks card
From color on the marks card, select “Edit Colors..” and change the Palette to red.
Exercise 7 – Dual Axis
1) Show Sales over discrete weekdays, by using the Order Date dimension.
Visualize as a bar chart.

2) Add Profit to the table by double clicking it and select Dual Axis.

3) On the marks card, set Profit to be visualized as a line.

4) Synchronize the two axises.

5) Add segment as a Filter and show it as a single value dropdown.

Direction Details

From the Measure list drag Sales to rows


From the Dimensions list drag Order Date to columns. Right click Order Date
and set the datepart to show weekdays (go to “More” and then select weekday)
On the Marks Card to the left of your vizualisation, change automatic to Bar.
From the Measure list drag Profit to rows. Right SUM(Profit) and select Dual
Axis.
On the marks card click on SUM(Profit) and change automatic to line.
Right click on the profit axis (on the right side) and select Synchronize Axis.
Right click on the axis again and deselect Show Header.
Drag Segment to filter and select all - OK. Right click on the Segment and click
Show Filter.
Put your cursor on the Segment filter in the top right corner beneath the show
me menu. Click the small triangle and change the filter type to a Single Value
Dropdown filter.
Exercise 8 – Dashboard actions
Create a dashboard with the first 4 sheets from the previous exercises.

Make sure that the year filter from exercise 2 applies to all 4 sheets

Make the sheets from the first 3 exercises filters.

Try different drill downs from Category to country to customer group to have a
specific customer list.

Direction Details
Drag in your four sheets as floating elements on the dashboard.
Make space for a head line and drag in a text box from the dashboard elements
just under the list of your available sheets.
Delete unnecessary legends
Click the arrow in the top right corner of the year filter and make it apply to all
sheets
In the top right corner of the three first sheets click the small triangle and select
use as filter.
Click the marks in the sheets to drill down the data and explore.
