Taylor Swift
Born in 1989,Taylor Swift is a country music singer-songwriter from Pennsylvania, USA. Her grandmother
was an opera singer, which laid the foundation for her career in music. She began singing in public when
she was only 10 years old and started writing songs soon afterwards. When she was 11, she gave her demo
tapes to all the music companies in Music Town, bravely ignoring the receptionists who were laughing
5 at her. She practised the guitar until her fingers hurt. At 13, when she was performing at the Bluebird
Café, Nashville, a music producer saw her and decided to sign her for his new record label. She had her
first hit in 2006, called Tim McGraw, about a summer love, and her album quickly rose to the top of the
charts. She said ‘It’s crazy, the first time making an album, not knowing if people are going to care what
I write in a song,’ but is now more confident. In the ACM awards ceremony Tim McGraw was watching
10 her perform and she introduced herself to him after the show.
Life as a singer is not easy. While she was on tour and learning about country music, she didn’t give up
her studies. She got good marks when she was at school and later continued through home-schooling
because life on the road meant she couldn’t go to school every day. Her second album was produced in
2008 and has been a great success. She writes or co-writes all her songs, is one of the most popular artists
15 on MySpace and has sold over 14 million downloads as well as ringtones for mobile phones.
