Engineering Mechanics (ME101) - Answers to Quiz-I

Answer to Question 1

Figure 1: Force-Couple System (from question)

Shown in figure 1 is the force-couple system (from question). First, the force-system in the
figure 1 has to be reduced to a force-couple at the origin. This is done as
X
F: FA + FG = R

(40 mm)i + (60 mm)j − (120 mm)k
⇒ R = (50 N )k + (70 N )
140 mm
⇒ R = (20 N )i + (30 N )j − (10 N )k
and R = 37.417 N
Also, we have
X X X
M: (r × F) + MC = MR
O

⇒ MR O = [(0.12 m)j × (50 N )k] + {(0.16m)i × [(20 N )i + (30 N )j − (60 N )k]}

(160 mm)i − (120 mm)j (40 mm)i − (120 mm)j + (60 mm)k
+ (10 N · m) + (14 N · m)
200 mm 140 mm
MO = (18 N · m)i − (8.4 N · m)j + (10.8 N · m)k

1
To be able to reduce the original forces and couples to a single equivalent force, R and MR
O
must be perpendicular, i.e. R · MR O = 0. Thus we have after substituting from the above
the values of R and MR O,

R · MR
O = (20i + 30j − 10k) · (18i − 8.4j + 10.8k) = 0

Figure 2: Reduction of the Perpendicular resultant force and moment into a single equivalent
force
Hence, R and MR O are perpendicular, so that the given system can be reduced to a single
equivalent force given by R. This equivalence is shown in Figure 2. This single equivalent
force meets the y − z plane at some point (let us say P ) with co-ordinates rp = yj + zk with
respect to O. To calculate where the line of action of R intersects the y − z plane, we require
O = rp × R,
MR where rp = yj + zk

i j k

⇒ 18i − 8.4j + 10.8k = 0 y z
20 30 −10
From the above, we obtain y = −0.54 m and z = −0.42 m. Hence the line of action of R
intersects the y − z plane at (x, y, z)=(0, −0.54, −0.42).

Answer to Question 2
(a) Let Rf be the force exerted by the foundation on pin f. The free-body diagram of the
frame is shown in Figure 3. For moment equilibrium of the frame, we have
X
Mf = 0, ⇒ −(P cos 150 )(0.7) + 175(0.3) + 160(0.8) + 110(1) = 0, ⇒ P = 429.63 N
For Force equilibrium of the frame, we have
X
Fx = 0, − Rf x + P cos 150 = 0, ⇒ Rf x = 415 N
X
Fy = 0, − 110 − 160 − 175 + Rf y + P sin150 = 0, ⇒ Rf y = 333.8011 N
q
Rf = Rf2 x + Rf2 y = 532.5863 N

Mf = 0, 110(1) + 160(0.8) + 175(0.3) − Fcd (0.64) = 0, ⇒ Fcd = 554.7743 N

(c) P = (P cos 150 )i + (P sin 150 )j = 415i + 111.1964j. The pin forces on member af are
