A REPORT ON

ONE DAY INDUSTRIAL VISIT


TO
SUN ENGINEERING WORKS, PUDUKKOTTAI

A batch of 7th semester students of Mechanical Engineering Department along


with three faculties visited Sun Engineering Works which is located at SIDCO
Industrial Estate, Pudukkottai on 25.07.2019. This visit was mainly focused on the
fabrication of metal by various methods like shear, turning, etc.

At first, the group reported to Sun Engineering Security Office, Main Gate, SIDCO
Industrial Estate on July 25th, 2019. At Sun Engineering, Mr. , SUN Engineering
employee addressed the students about their company manufacturing products
and their methodology. He also explained the working of each fabricating unit in
the industry. Once this section was done, the officials from the industry took us to
the workplace where the fabrications were made.
At first we entered the a unit in that industry when cutting of metal sheets were
done by using Hydraulic Shearing machine were the workers are handling a 5mm
thick metal plate to cut into specific dimensioned plates. The worker who was
operating that shearing machine explained the various parts of that machine such
as hydraulic oil pump and main motor. He also demonstrated the working the
working of the machine by doing one cutting operation before us. Then we
moved forward to the next unit of the unit where the drilling and milling
processes were taken out. Unfortunately we entered the industry during the mid
noon, it was an scheduled lunch break in that industry. So we were unable to see
the working of the drilling and milling processes. We had a look at various types of
drilling and angled milling machines which we operated by hydraulic and by
manual operation.

Then we moved to the next unit of the industry where the turning operations
were done. In this unit also a worker demonstrated and explains the operation
which clearly gave us the working of that machine. Next to this we also saw a gas
cutting machine was operated by worker. Here we say how a gas cutting
machines is used to cut with a better finish on the metal surface.

Then we moved to the next unit of the industry where we say a computerized
laser cutter we used for cutting operation. Although the above mentioned
machines were seen by us in our local lathe shops, this was actually new to us.
We had an immense interest on seeing that CNC operated laser cutting machine.
After seeing the working of that machine we headed back to the next unit of the
industry. In this unit, sand blasting operation was carried out. We were not
allowed go near to the workplace in this unit as the workers who were working in
that unit have some special suit in order to secure themselves from that sand
storm. By seeing this operation from a distance we moved the next and last unit
of the industry where they are being worked for minor jobs such as polishing,
minor drills and many simpler final level tasks are carried out. After entering all
the units, the jobs are kept for their final inspection which will be carried out by
the officials from BHEL and other companies who had given them the order. After
seen all these operation, it was around 02:30PM we came off the industry. We
are very thankful to the PRIST University management and staffs who hereby
helped us by organizing such event as we directly went to the industrial site
where the operations which we are studying in our classrooms we practically
done. By this Industrial Visit, We got a clear view on major topics such as how
these machines actually works, how to work in a industry and much more.
