COMMUNICATION FOR ACTIVISM

Bhoomi College, 24th and 25th July 2019

From Donald Trump’s presidency to LGBTQ movement to ‘Netflix and chill’, communication has
been a vital tool in enabling ideas to influence change, irrespective of the kind. Interestingly today,
communication is being extensively and effectively used for deeds that are invariably harming the
planet. And on the contrary what we see is that the development sector finds communication to be
one of the most challenging tools for mobilising people to act for the planet, to save the planet. We,
the development/alternative sector somehow faces difficulty in explaining the problem to the
mainstream lay man. We wonder why? Where is the gap? What are we missing out on?

Unfortunately today, we are in dire need of mass movements and a revolution for our living earth.
Today, we need the world to rethink their choices and actions.

Hence, objective of the two days will be to explore communication as a tool for activism.

There are different kinds of communication content, the most relevant for today being -
Films/Movies/videos, social media content and conversations.
Conversation being one of the most tricky and dreaded modes of communication, the two days will
focus specifically on the different nuances of conversations.

Types of conversations the sessions will focus on :

1) Non verbal -
• The following warm up activities are designed to focus on conversing through expressions and
body language :
(a) Make a line
The group has to form a line in (1) alphabetical orders of their names and (2) increasing order of
their age, without using words. This exercise focuses on communicating through expressions.

(b) Penguin calls

Class will be divided into smaller groups of penguins, will be asked to choose a mother Penguin
and a penguin call for their group. Groups will be dispersed. Being blind folded and using only their
respective calls the penguins have to find their mother. This exercise will focus on listening.

• Tableau
Fellows will be encouraged to share stories. One story out of the many will be chosen. The class
will be divided into groups. Each group is to do a tableau presentation of the chosen story.
The activity focuses on visually communicating the story without words.

2) Verbal -
• Deeper personal conversations
(a) Humans of sustainable planet project - Led by Deepten Sarkar Bose
The session will be on having 1-1 conversations at a deeper level. Basic skills of portrait
photography will also be covered.

• Constructive and opinionated discussions

(a) Magic wand
Individuals will share stories, opinions and perspectives with each other in pairs. The
second person of the pair will need to summarise his partners views. Only if the summary is
correct the next person will get to speak. When mistake is made the speaker restarts the
narration/summary.
Meanwhile the facilitator will have the wand which gives him the following power -
• Flip : The speaker will have to say the opposite of what his partner said.
• Number of sentences : The facilitator can at any time ask the pairs to summarise in his
choice of number of sentences.

Topics for this session will be :

- Narrate some of the most craziest experiences from your travels.
- Talk about your favourite foods
- Dating applications
- The rising LGTBTQ movement in India
- New age spirituality in times of increasing God men
- Slow fashion

• Conversations that need persuasion and convincing

(a) Change my mind
Groups of fellows will be given choice of statements. There will be individuals who do not
agree to these statements. The fellows need to convince and thus change the mind of these
individuals.
