Biomagnification

Biomagnification is the process by which chemicals like pesticides accumulate in greater concentrations in organisms higher up the food chain through a series of prey-predator relationships. As prey are consumed, they pass along chemicals they have absorbed or been exposed to, resulting in higher concentrations building up in their predators. Over successive links in the food web, concentrations of chemicals in top predators can become dangerously magnified from the original low levels found in plants and small animals at the bottom of the chain.
