Operating Environment of Computers

Introduction
The fundamental operation method of MELSHORT2 is explained in this help.

The fundamental operation method of Windows is omitted in this help. Please refer to the manual of
Windows, or a help.

Please check that MELSHORT2 is correctly set up in a computer before beginning [MELSHORT2]
program.
The feature
#Easy and visible operation To draw a skeleton diagram the necessary operation is clicking a button
of elements only. The discrimination of two breakers can be performed by changing of characteristic
curves at co-ordination view.

#The huge amount of data Huge data of each element are prepared in this MELSHORT2. Therefore an
operating characteristic curve of a circuit breaker can be shown in a moment and the necessary input
item to calculation becomes minimum.

#Conformation to Standards
MELSHORT2 is based on the following standards.
1) Calculation of short-circuit current ; IEC60909, IEC61363-1
2) Over-current protection ; IEC60364-4-43

APPENDIX B : Technical information
B1. Calculation of short-circuit current

B2. Other calculations

B3. Automatic selection

B4. Back-up protection (Cascade)

B5. Selective interruption (Discrimination)

B6. Wire protection

B7. Protection against electric shock

B1. Calculation of short-circuit current
B1.1 Calculation of short-circuit current (FAR-FROM-GENERATOR SHORT CIRCUITS)

Calculation of short-circuit currents follows IEC60909 Section one (FAR-FROM-GENERATOR

SHORT CIRCUITS) generally. There is no AC component decay because far from generator. I"k3 is
an initial symmetrical short-circuit current of three-phase (r.m.s.). Calculation is conducted by %-
impedance method. Each impedance will be summed by vector way.

B1.2 %-impedance

A %-impedance of each element is presented by a %-impedance of equipment capacity usually. In

MELSHORT2, this %-impedance is shown as %e. For calculations of short-circuit current, a %-
impedance of reference capacity is useful. Another %-impedance is shown as %r in MELSHORT2.
The default value of reference capacity is 1000kVA, and this reference capacity is changeable at a
window of Skeleton setup.

B1.3 I"k3direct, I"k3total

When there are plural Sources, Generators and Motor effects, short-circuit currents from another
circuit are added to the short-circuit current. This matter makes a selection of circuit breakers
difficult. Therefore a short-circuit current is indicated by two kinds of method.

I"3direct : Short-circuit current which flows through the element.

Low-voltage circuit breakers : I"k3 from primary terminals to secondary terminals.
Transformer : I"k3 from primary terminals to secondary terminals.
Generator : I"k3 which flows from the Generator.
Motor effect : I"k3 which flows from the Motor effect.

I"k3total : Short-circuit current including short-circuit currents from all sources.

B1.4 Calculation of short-circuit current (NEAR-TO-GENERATOR SHORT CIRCUITS)

In case of near-to-generator, short-circuit current have decaying AC component. In other words,

short-circuit impedance is changing depend on time. In MELSHORT2 Generator and Motor effect are
considering this matter and follow IEC61393-1. To simplify, the calculations of Generator and Motor
effect are considering change of impedance at the region from these elements to Zero conductor only.
In downstream of common Zero conductor, the impedance of Generator and Motor effect are regarded
as fixed.
B1.4.1 Equations of short-circuit current's calculation for a generator
B1.4.2 Equations of short-circuit current's calculation for a Motor effect (contribution)
B2. Other calculations
B2.1 Voltage drop

Voltage drop of a Bus-bar and a Wire can be calculated by following equations.

B2.2 Electromagnetic force

Electromagnetic force of a Bus-bar and a Wire can be calculated by following equations.

B3. Automatic selection
B3.1 Check of bus-bar size or wire size

In MELSHORT2, comparison of the bus-bar size or the wire size between rated current of the
upstream circuit breaker is conducted automatically. If Iz is less than In, an alarm window appears.

B3.2 Automatic selection by Icu or Ics

Conditions of automatic selection by Icu or Ics are followings.

B4. Back-up protection (Cascade)
B5. Selective interruption (Discrimination)
B5.1 Choice of methods

There is 4 choice to study discrimination. Please choose any one suitable for your case.
Table : Reliable, but combinations are limited.
Inst : Applicable for any combinations, but the selectivity limit current Is is not so high.
Inst DC : For severe study
Inst with current-limiting : Is may be high, but data of current limiting are not enough.

B5.2 Selective interruption (Discrimination) by the authorized table

B5.3 Selective interruption (Discrimination) by Inst. or Inst.DC

B5.4 Selective interruption (Discrimination) by Inst. with current-limiting

When the downstream breaker is current limiting type, the region of selective interruption becomes
wide. Because the real short circuit current becomes smaller than the prospective short circuit current
owing to current limiting function of the downstream breaker.
B6. Wire protection against short-circuit current
B7. Protection against electric shock
