Beam To Col. Pin Connection Design

This document provides the design of a bolted pin connection between a beam and column according to IS800-2007. Key details include: - The connection uses 4 bolts in the beam web and 3 bolts in the column flange, all with a diameter of 24mm. - Calculations show the bolt capacity in shear is sufficient to resist the design force of 200kN. - Checks are performed to ensure the bearing strength of the beam, cleat angle, and column are not exceeded. - Slip resistance is also sufficient with a factor of safety of over 2.8.

BEAM TO COLUMN BOLTED PIN CONNECTION DESIGN – AS PER IS800-2007

Reaction / Force = 200 kn

Required Data :-
Bolt Property:- Column Section:-
Type of Bolt= H-24-70 (HSFG) Column flange width = 200 mm
No. of Row in Beam = 1 Refer diagram(max.= 2) Column flange Thk. 12 mm (connecting flange)
No. of Row in Col. Flange = 2 Refer diagram(min.= 2) Ultimate Tensile Stress,Fu = 490 Mpa
Let's Provide No. of bolts = 4 in beam web Yield Stress, fy = 345 Mpa
Let's Provide No. of bolts = 3 in col. Flange Beam / Joist Section :-
Bolt Dia. = 24 mm Depth(mm) Thk.(mm)
Hole dia. = 26 mm Web - 500 8
Bolt Grade = 8.8 Width (mm) I/F (mm) O/F (mm)
Length of Bolt = 70 mm (refer side table) Flange- 200 10 10
Thread of Bolt = 40 mm (refer side table) Ultimate Tensile Stress,Fu = 490 Mpa
Pitch Distance (p) = 90 mm Yield Stress, fy = 345 Mpa
Edge Distance (e1) = 40 mm (in beam web) Angle Cleat :-
Edge Distance (e2) = 85 mm (in col. Flange) Let's us provide an = 65X65X8 Angle
Gauge Distance (g) = 100 mm Thk. Of angle flange = 8 mm
Ultimate Tensile Stress,Fub = 800 Mpa Ultimate Tensile Stress,Fu = 410 Mpa
Yield Stress, fy = 640 Mpa Yield Stress, fy = 240 Mpa
* Note:- THIS IS A PIN CONNECTION DESIGN WITH BOLTS & CLEATS (MADE OF -ISA ANGLE ).
Analysis:-
* Beam Web. Connection with two side cleats govern the Double shear case. & beam to col. Using cleat govern single shear case
We need to check the bearing against both The Beam web. & angle flange plate)
Shear Capacity of bolt in single shear= ((Fub/sqroot (3)) *(Nn Anb + Ns Asb))/ƴmb As per clause 10.3.3
(For Beam Web) (For col. Flange)
Here, Fub = 800 Mpa 800 Mpa
Nn= 0 0
Ns= 2 1
Asb= 452.39 mm2 452.39 mm2
Anb= 352.50 mm2 352.50 mm2
Ƴmb = 1.25 1.25 As per Table 5
Shear Capacity of bolt = 334.32 KN 167.16 KN
(Double shear ) (Single shear )
Bearing against Web Plate,
Strength of bearing on web plate= 2.5**Kb*d*t*Fu/Ƴmb As per clause 10.3.4
Here, d = 24 mm
t= 8 mm
Fu = 490 Mpa
Kb = 0.51 smaller of (e/3d0) , (P/3d0 -0.25) ,(Fub/Fu) ,1.0
Ƴmb = 1.25 0.51 0.90 1.633 1.0

Strength of bearing on 8 mm Web plate= 96.49 kn

Similarly, Bearing against Angle ,
t= 8 mm
Fu = 410 Mpa
Kb = 0.51 smaller of (e/3d0) , (P/3d0 -0.25) ,(Fub/Fu) ,1.0
0.51 0.90 1.951 1.0
Strength of bearing on 8 mm Angle = 161.48 kn

Hence , Bolt value/ Strength of Bolt = 96.49 kn (For beam web )

Required No. of Bolts= 2.07 Ok

Hence Provide 24 mm dia.4 Nos. of Bolt in each row

Similarly, Bearing against column flange ,
t= 12 mm
Fu = 490 Mpa
Kb = 0.90 smaller of (e/3d0) , (P/3d0 -0.25) ,(Fub/Fu) ,1.0
1.09 0.90 1.633 1.0
Strength of bearing on 12 mm flange = 510.20 kn
Hence , Bolt value/ Strength of Bolt = 161.48 kn (For column flange)
Required No. of Bolts in each row= 0.62 Ok

Hence Provide 24 mm dia.3 Nos. of Bolt in each row

Slip Resistance on face of column
Let the eccentricity(e) = 98 mm
ri= 135 As per clause 10.4.3
ʯf = 0.45 (for 8.8 grade bolt) As per clause 10.4.3
'ne = 1 (ne = 1 ; single shear , ne = 2 ; double shear) As per clause 10.4.3
Kh = 1 (1.0 for fastners in clearance holes) As per clause 10.4.3
Proof stress (f0)= 560 (0.7 x fu)
Min. bolt tension at proof load = 197.4 kn

Horizontal shear force on bolt due to moment develop due to eccentricity-

= (Vx.ex.ri)/Ʃ(ri^2)
65.3333333333 kn
Vertical shear per bolt Req. = 50 kn

Resultant = 82.27 kn

Slip resistance capacity of a single bolt in single shear =

=ʯf.ne.Kh.Fo/ɣmf
71.06 kn

Bearing resistance on angle (cleat) plate/flange =

80.74 kn

Hence , Bolt value/ Strength of Bolt = 71.06 kn

No. of bolt Req.= 2.81 < 6 Ok

slip Resistance on beam web & cleat angle

e= 135 mm
ri= 90 mm

Horizontal shear force on bolt due to moment due to eccentricity

75.0 kn
Alternate method,
let the centre of pressure assumed at= 25 mm
Horizontal shear force on bolt due to moment due to eccentricity

e= 135 mm
r1= 90 mm
r2= 0 mm
r3= 115 mm

Horizontal shear force = 72.8 Kn < 75 Ok

Vertical shear per bolt = 33.3 kn

Resultant shear force= 80.07 Kn < 334.32 (for double shear) Ok

80.07 Kn < 167.16 (for single shear) Ok

Hence Provide 4 Nos. of 24 mm dia Bolt in Beam with both side cleat angle .
Hence Provide 3 Nos. of 24 mm dia Bolt in each row in column flange with cleats.

Check for the capacity of cleat angle:-

Take two angles ISA 65X65X8 of length 350 mm.

Bending at bolt line of connection to column flange.

Bending Moment = 9000 Nm

Moment Capacity= 47040 Nm > 9000 Ok

Hence Provide two angles ISA 65X65X8 of length 350 mm.
