Objective Tests

OBJECTIVE TEST

According to W. Wiersma and G. Juns 1990”objective test items are items that can be
objectively scored items on which persons select a response from a list or option.

OBJECTIVE TEST CLASSIFIED INTO TYPE:

 Selection type
1. True-false item
2. MCQ
3. Matching type
4. Multiple response
 Supply type
1. Short answer
2. Completion type

SELECTION TYPE:

1. True and false


Alternative response consist of a declarative statement where student has to makes
T/F, R/W, C/In C, Y/N, Factor opinion, agree/ disagree. Question or declarative
statements followed by yes/no or true/ false.
The student is asked to tick mark the correct responses.
Essay to prepare, takes comparatively multiple choice.

2. MCQ
Most widely used
Characteristics
 Stem- problem may be stated as a direct/indirect statement.
 Choice/option include word no or symbols.
 Distracters-wrong or incorrect answer.
 Answer-right alternative item

Example:

The gland secreting insulin is-


a. Thyroid
b. Pancreas
c. Hypothalamus
Answer: pancreas
Distracter: others

Advantage :

1. Ensure objectively, reliability and validity.


2. Provide precise and unambiguous measurement of higher intellectual processes.
3. Provide detailed feedback for both student and teacher.
4. Essay and rapid to score.

Disadvantages:

1. Takes longtime for construction.


2. Requires careful preparation.
3. Costly when group is on all to respond.

3. Multiple responses

In this more than one of the given alternative is correct, but there is only one correct to or
question started in the first sentence of the item.

E.g.: Which of the following group could be including among k+ sparing diuretics?

a. Diamox and bumet


b. Chlorthalidone and chlorthiazide.
c. Spirondoctone and triamlterene.
d. Frusemide and ethacrynic with choice.
e. 3 only
f. 1 and 2
g. 3 and 2

4. Matching type

Prepared in two column i.e. response column and stimulus column, the items have to be
matched.

Uses: useful in testing lower level of intelligence skills such as recall.

SUPPLY TYPE:
1. Short answer
Short answer items use a direct question, where as the completion items of an
incomplete statement,
e.g.: What is the name of the man discovered penicillin?
Answer- The name of the person who discovered penicillin is Alexander
Fleming.

2. Completion type

Here an incomplete statement is used.


e.g.: The sphygmomanometer is used to measure the blood pressure.

CONCLUSION
Essay and objective test items can be used to encourage students to develop important
cognitive outcomes, understanding of principles, organization and integration of ideas and
application of knowledge. Neither test item readily encourages rote learning.
